Bugonia is a sharp, unsettling collision of hostage drama and conspiracy thriller: intimate in its staging, expansive in the anxieties it mocks, and deliberately abrasive in its violence. Yorgos Lanthimos gets gripping, finely controlled work from Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons, but the film’s misanthropy and bleak provocations make “masterpiece” a matter of taste, not a safe promise.
What is Bugonia about?
Two conspiracy-obsessed men kidnap a powerful company CEO because they believe she is an alien bent on destroying Earth. The story holds the audience inside the ensuing struggle over what is true, turning a sealed-off hostage situation into a satirical thriller about power, belief, and ecological anxiety.

Yorgos Lanthimos directs Will Tracy’s screenplay. Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons lead a cast that also includes Aidan Delbis, Stavros Halkias, and Alicia Silverstone. The Venice Film Festival program lists the film at 120 minutes; Universal Pictures Home Entertainment gives its feature runtime as 1:58:04. La Biennale di Venezia’s program and Universal Pictures Home Entertainment’s release page use those respective listings.
Why the performances and restraint work
The film’s central tension comes from the contrast between its enormous claims and its confined setting. Rather than relying on spectacle, Lanthimos lets the chamber-drama framework tighten around the characters. Stone and Plemons give the standoff its human weight: their performances make the grim premise feel less like a puzzle to solve than an increasingly uncomfortable encounter between people with incompatible versions of reality.

That approach distinguishes this adaptation from its source. The Atlantic describes the 2003 South Korean original, Save the Green Planet!, as more maximalist in its visual flair and twists; Bugonia, by contrast, is muted and often chamber-like, with its leads grounding the grim story in unexpected poignancy. The Atlantic’s review captures the trade-off: restraint gives the performances room, though viewers expecting an extravagant, constantly escalating thriller may find the film more contained than its premise suggests.
What makes its satire so uncomfortable
Bugonia puts corporate language, conspiracy thinking, and environmental dread into the same pressure cooker. Its humor is often absurd, but it does not use comedy to make the subject matter easy. At Venice, Lanthimos told the Associated Press, “Not much of the dystopia in this film is very fictional. A lot of it is very reflective of the real world.” That observation helps explain the film’s bite: it satirizes the certainty and self-interest on both sides of its conflict without offering an especially comforting place to stand.

Bees and beekeeping are a significant metaphor. The title refers to an old belief that bees could emerge from an ox’s carcass; the Associated Press reports that Lanthimos chose it. The image suits a film preoccupied with life, decay, and the stories people tell to make sense of a damaged world. The AP’s Venice interview also records Stone describing the film as an entertaining ride, with absurdism and humor woven through it.
Who is likely to enjoy it—and who may not
The discomfort is part of the design, but it is also the clearest reason the film will divide viewers. Time calls it an aggressively wicked black comedy and emphasizes its graphic, ugly, brutish qualities. That sits alongside The Atlantic’s praise for the muted staging and poignant lead performances. Together, the responses point to a useful decision: watch for the tense two-hander, controlled visual style, and provocative satire if those are draws; be wary if you want warmth, light comedy, or violence kept at a distance. Time’s review makes the harsher side of the experience clear.

Content-wise, Universal’s home-video notice flags bloody violent content, a suicide, grisly images, and language. This is a dark comedy in tone, not a gentle one in subject matter or imagery.

No. It is an adaptation of Jang Joon-hwan’s 2003 South Korean film Save the Green Planet!, not a book. The broad premise carries over, while the story moves to the United States and the CEO becomes a woman. The Associated Press interview discusses the adaptation and the title’s bee-related meaning.
