In Nandini Ramnath’s December 9, 2022, review for Scroll.in, the series’ strongest assets are its performances and rooted sense of place; its crowded, contrived plotting is the chief weakness.
What is CAT about?
Netflix describes CAT as a drama in which a former police informant is asked to infiltrate a drug empire and discovers a connection to his past. The eight-episode series stars Randeep Hooda, Suvinder Vicky and Hasleen Kaur, and lists Punjabi as its original audio. Netflix’s title page is regional, so availability and the displayed audio, subtitle and age-classification options may vary by territory: Netflix’s UK page for CAT.
Ramnath’s review identifies Hooda’s character as Gurnam, a Sikh motor mechanic with a tragic past, and describes his return to informant work after his brother is arrested for drug-running. Police officer Sehtab Singh, played by Suvinder Vicky, becomes a key figure connecting the story’s past and present. The series was created and written by Balwinder Singh Janjua and directed by Janjua, Rupinder Chahal and Jimmy Singh, according to the review.
What works: performances and a distinctly Punjabi setting
Ramnath’s central praise is that CAT gives a familiar undercover-informant crime premise a specific local texture. She writes that Janjua brings “rich local detail and a rootedness missing from outside productions.” Punjab is more than a backdrop in her account: the setting shapes the show’s atmosphere, its supporting roles and the world Gurnam must navigate.

Suvinder Vicky is Ramnath’s standout. She calls him “CAT’s big cat,” praising his portrayal of Sehtab as a compromised officer whose maneuvering binds the separate strands of the narrative. She also commends the local supporting cast. The result, in her assessment, is a series whose ensemble and sense of place often make its familiar crime framework compelling.
What holds the series back
The review’s main reservation is structural. Ramnath finds that plot contrivances can overwhelm the story, while eight episodes carry a large number of strands: caste identity, police violence, women’s roles and migration among them. These subjects give the drama social breadth, but the review argues that the accumulation can weigh down the crime plot rather than deepen it consistently.

The series builds toward stand-offs and a second season, but Ramnath’s judgment is not that every thread lands equally well. For viewers choosing it primarily for a tightly controlled, original crime narrative, the crowded plotting is the clearest caution. The review’s praise is stronger for the cast and local atmosphere than for the mechanics of the story.

Ramnath’s review makes the case for watching if performance and regional specificity matter as much as crime-story momentum. Hooda anchors the informant premise, while Vicky and the supporting cast supply much of the show’s force; Punjab’s local texture distinguishes it from a more generic drug-operation thriller. Viewers who prioritize streamlined plotting may be less satisfied by the many narrative strands and contrivances identified in the review.
