Yes. On September 15, 2023, TheWrap reported that an Allen spokesperson confirmed Byron Allen had offered Disney $10 billion for a package that reportedly included ABC, its local stations, FX, and National Geographic. It was a reported preliminary offer—not an accepted deal or a completed acquisition.

What did Byron Allen reportedly offer to buy?

The reported $10 billion proposal covered more than ABC’s national broadcast network. TheWrap and Bloomberg Law described a package including ABC’s local stations, FX, and National Geographic as well. The reports do not establish the proposal’s precise legal terms.

Asset Type Reported inclusion
ABC National broadcast network Included in the reported package
ABC local stations Local television stations Included in the reported package
FX Cable network Included in the reported package
National Geographic Cable network Included in the reported package

The $10 billion figure is the amount attributed to the reported offer, not a final sale price. TheWrap said an Allen spokesperson confirmed the offer; Bloomberg Law characterized it as tentative.

Did Disney accept the offer or sell ABC?

No public evidence in the cited reporting shows that Disney accepted Allen’s offer or sold ABC to him. In September 2023, Disney said it was “open to considering a variety of strategic options” but had made no decision to sell ABC or another property, according to Axios.

That distinction matters: a reported offer, even one confirmed by a spokesperson, does not establish an agreement or a completed transaction. In December 2024, PolitiFact reported that Disney still owned ABC. A notice dated April 28, 2026, attributed to the FCC Media Bureau, concerned early renewal applications for Disney’s ABC station licenses, consistent with Disney and ABC still holding those licenses at that time. The notice was republished by Publicnow.

How the story developed

  • July 2023: Reports said Disney CEO Bob Iger was weighing options for non-ESPN linear television assets, including ABC. That context did not mean Disney had accepted Allen’s proposal.
