Bradley Cooper signed Matthew McConaughey’s name because a woman who recognized Cooper from Failure to Launch asked him to autograph something as “Matthew.” Cooper said he initially told her he wasn’t McConaughey, then went along with the request. The story is funny because she knew who Cooper was; she simply wanted the autograph in his co-star’s name.
What happened at the Applebee’s
Cooper recounted the encounter during a 2008 appearance on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, according to a later report by Koimoi. He said he was in Minnesota working on an independent film when a woman approached him at an Applebee’s. She recognized him from Failure to Launch, the film in which he appeared alongside McConaughey.
She asked Cooper to sign as Matthew. Cooper’s reported response was, “Oh, but I’m not Matthew.” The woman reportedly replied, “I know, but you were next to him [so] that’s okay.” Cooper said he ultimately signed the autograph. Koimoi also attributes to him the line, “This is actually the worst way to get recognised.” The dialogue is a secondary-source transcription; the original broadcast recording or transcript has not been independently verified here.
Why the story is not a case of mistaken identity
The woman did not confuse Cooper with McConaughey. She recognized Cooper as the actor who had been beside McConaughey in the movie and wanted the autograph in McConaughey’s name. That mismatch—Cooper holding the pen while signing for his co-star—is the odd detail behind the anecdote.

How the anecdote was later retold
In a shorter retelling published on January 5, 2024, Infobae likewise says the woman recognized Cooper from Failure to Launch and asked him to sign as Matthew McConaughey. The fuller account, including the Minnesota setting and reported exchange, comes from Koimoi’s May 3, 2023, report of Cooper’s 2008 story.
