Bryan Ferry’s 2024 song “Star” began with an idea from Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, but it is not a conventional feature by the pair. Ferry developed the music, while painter and writer Amelia Barratt became his main co-author and performs the song’s spoken reading.
How “Star” came together
The track started with an idea and demo from Reznor and Ross. Ferry developed the music from that starting point, then asked Barratt to help with the words. In a 2024 interview with The Music, Ferry described Barratt as “the main co-author with me on Star” and said “she does the reading of it.” The Music interview
That division matters when describing the collaboration: Reznor and Ross supplied the initial musical idea, rather than being identified in the cited accounts as featured vocal performers. Barratt contributed the writing and spoken performance; Ferry shaped the music and worked with her on the song. Contemporary account of the collaboration
Who performs on “Star”?
- Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross: supplied the original idea/demo that set the track in motion.
- Bryan Ferry: developed the music and collaborated on the finished song.
- Amelia Barratt: contributed writing and performs the reading/vocal part; Ferry called her the main co-author.
Ferry has described collaboration as part of the appeal of making music: “Music is very collaborative sometimes, and that’s one of the best things about it.” The Music interview
