In a statement posted on Instagram on 1 July 2025, the band said: “We are being targeted for speaking up.” ITV News reported that Bob Vylan rejected the suggestion that it supported the death of Jews, Arabs or any other group, writing: “We are not for the death of jews, arabs or any other race or group of people.” The group framed its position as opposition to what it called a violent military machine.

Bob Vylan also argued that the controversy was a distraction from the story and urged people concerned about human life and freedom of speech to speak up. These were the band’s explanation and framing of the backlash; they do not establish how others interpreted the performance.

Bob Vylan performed at Glastonbury on 28 June 2025. Reporting said frontman Bobby Vylan led a chant directed at the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The performance drew criticism, including accusations that it was antisemitic, and prompted a police investigation. The band rejected claims of antisemitism and said its position was opposition to military action in Gaza.

The dispute involved different questions: what was said onstage, how the comments were understood, and whether they met the legal standard for prosecution. The band’s stated intent and critics’ objections should be kept distinct rather than treated as interchangeable accounts.
What did police decide about the Glastonbury chants?
On 23 December 2025, Avon and Somerset Police said it had concluded its investigation and would take no further action. The force stated: “We have concluded, after reviewing all the evidence, that it does not meet the criminal threshold outlined by the CPS for any person to be prosecuted.” It also said there was insufficient evidence for a realistic prospect of conviction.

This was a police decision not to pursue prosecution, not an acquittal, court ruling or judicial finding. Police said the investigation considered the words, intent and wider context, as well as freedom of speech and legal precedent. The force consulted the Crown Prosecution Service, experienced police colleagues, national hate-crime leads and an independent barrister.
Police also cautioned that the decision did not dismiss public concern: “Simply because there is a high threshold for criminal conviction should in no way minimise the concerns raised by many sectors of society around the nature of the comments made.” The legal outcome therefore answers whether the evidence supported prosecution; it does not settle every public or political disagreement about the performance.
