CM Punk and AJ Lee’s public story has two distinct timelines: a WWE romance storyline that began on television in 2012, and a real marriage they kept largely private. The available official photos and records document the TV plot and later WWE appearances—not the start of their private relationship.
2012: The WWE storyline begins
WWE’s retrospective points to a backstage moment in May 2012 as the spark for the summer’s televised story. That is the beginning of the on-screen narrative, not evidence of when Punk and Lee began dating in real life. The official WWE retrospective presents the story as a sequence of TV events.
June 11: a kiss before a match
WWE’s AJ Lee profile records Lee kissing Punk on Raw on June 11, 2012, before a match. WWE’s 2013 article about Lee rating her kisses explicitly treats the moment as part of the televised story involving Daniel Bryan. Images from this period should therefore be captioned as storyline stills, not as documentary evidence of the couple’s private life.
Proposal and other plot turns
WWE’s retrospective describes the storyline as including kisses, broken tables and a proposal. The proposal was a television plot beat; it should not be presented as the couple’s real-life engagement. WWE’s 2013 discussion of the on-screen kisses reinforces that distinction.

The real relationship: private by choice
WWE identifies Punk as Lee’s husband in its official profile. That confirms their marriage, but the sources do not provide a detailed photographic record of private milestones or establish when they began dating.
In a Us Weekly interview quoted by Wrestleview on April 9, 2026, Lee said, “I didn’t talk about my relationship for like a decade.” She described sharing personal experiences selectively, when she believes they might help someone feel less alone. Lee also said she had generally kept her husband off her social media. Her explanation helps account for why a public photo timeline of their relationship is sparse; it is not a complete chronology of their private life. See Wrestleview’s report of Lee’s remarks.

2025: Lee returns to WWE alongside Punk
WWE’s retrospective includes Lee’s 2025 return to back up Punk, and WWE’s profile describes her return with her husband. These are public WWE milestones and suitable points for a photo timeline, provided each image is captioned with its verified event and date. WWE’s Chicago gallery page is an official image source, but its accessible page does not expose image captions, so confirm the live gallery details before using a specific photograph.
2025–26: working together as a married couple
In the same reported interview, Lee said that the last time they were together in WWE in 2014, they were not married because Punk had already left. She said she had wrestled for about a year during their marriage and described the current period as their first time on the road as a married couple. That is Lee’s account of their shared WWE work, not a full record of their private life. The remarks are reported by Wrestleview.

How to read the photo timeline
- 2012 television images: identify them as WWE storyline moments, including the June 11 Raw kiss and later plot beats.
- Private-life photos: do not infer a dating start, engagement date or other milestone from a storyline image or an undated post.
- Return and joint-work images: verify the event date and caption at the official source; distinguish a WWE appearance from a claim about their private history.
WWE has an interview listing about Lee and Punk’s romance, but the accessible page has no transcript. It cannot substantiate additional quotations without checking the recording.
