Busta Rhymes, whose legal name is Trevor Smith, was issued a desk appearance ticket for misdemeanor third-degree assault after a reported January 10, 2025 incident in Brooklyn, according to police information reported by the Associated Press. A desk appearance ticket directs someone to appear in court; it is not a finding of guilt. Later reporting said the criminal case was sealed, and the sources available here do not establish a public disposition.

What was Busta Rhymes charged with?

The Associated Press reported on January 17, 2025, that police said Smith was issued a desk appearance ticket on Tuesday, January 14, for third-degree assault, a misdemeanor. Police connected the charge to an incident reported on January 10 in Dumbo, Brooklyn.

A desk appearance ticket is a direction to appear in court, not a conviction or a finding that the alleged conduct occurred. The charge should therefore be understood as an accusation in a criminal proceeding, not proof of guilt.

What did police say happened in Brooklyn?

According to the AP’s account of the police report, officers responding to a 911 call spoke with a 50-year-old man who said he had been punched repeatedly during an argument. Police said the man was taken to a hospital with swelling on the left side of his face. Those details are police-reported claims; they are not an adjudicated account of the incident.

What is known about the criminal case’s status?

In the AP’s January 17, 2025 report, the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office said Smith was due in court on February 3, 2025, and declined to provide further information. That was the status reported at the time, not confirmation of what later happened in court.

May 2026 coverage said the corresponding criminal case was sealed. The sources available here do not establish an accessible public disposition or a criminal finding of guilt. A sealed case should not be described as dismissed, resolved, or proof of guilt without a reliable record establishing that outcome.

How does the former assistant’s civil lawsuit differ?

In August 2025, Dashiel Gables, described in reporting as a former assistant, filed a separate federal civil complaint. The complaint alleged assault, wage violations, and related workplace claims. These are allegations made by a plaintiff in a civil filing, not findings by a court.

The civil claims are distinct from the Brooklyn criminal matter. In a statement reported by the Los Angeles Times, Rhymes said: “I have been made aware of the claims made by Dashiel Gables, and I completely and categorically deny these allegations.” The Times also reported that he called the suit an “attempted shake-down”; that characterization is his statement, not an established description of the complaint.

What has been reported about the civil settlement?

May 2026 coverage described the civil dispute as privately settled through mediation, with terms undisclosed at that time. In August 2026, Complex reported that court filings disclosed a $25,000 settlement proposal and that judicial approval was still required for the wage portion. That figure and approval status reflect the August 2026 report; they do not establish the later status of the approval.

A civil settlement does not, by itself, amount to an admission of wrongdoing or a judicial finding that an assault allegation is true. Nor does the reported civil settlement establish the disposition of the separate criminal case.
