Brian Cox said Margot Robbie was “far too beautiful” to play Catherine Earnshaw in Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights adaptation, and joked about her Australian accent. But Cox had not seen the film: he acknowledged that it was wrong of him to judge and added that it “may be a brilliant film.” His comments came in a Times interview published April 3, 2026.
What did Brian Cox say about Margot Robbie?
Cox was asked about Robbie’s casting as Catherine Earnshaw opposite Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff in Emerald Fennell’s adaptation of Wuthering Heights. He said, “Margot Robbie is far too beautiful for that role.”
He followed the criticism with a qualification: “I think there should be something more of the Gypsy about her but it’s wrong of me to judge. It may be a brilliant film.” TheWrap reported that Cox had not seen the adaptation, so these were comments about casting, not an assessment of the finished film. The term “Gypsy” appears here as part of Cox’s reported quote.
Why did he joke about Robbie’s accent?
Us Weekly reported that Cox imitated a stylized Australian accent while riffing on the names “Keith Cliff” and “Cathy,” playing on the names Heathcliff and Catherine. His joke included the exchange: “‘Keith Cliff! It’s me, Cathy!’ ‘How ya doing, Keith? Awright?’ ‘Yeah, I’m awright!’”

The accent bit was part of his joking response to the casting; the reported coverage does not establish that Cox was making a separate claim about Robbie’s acting or her performance in the film.
What else did Cox discuss in the interview?
The recaps describe a mix of fresh interview remarks and older opinions, rather than one new verdict on every performer named in the headlines. Cox revisited his description of Johnny Depp as “so overblown, so overrated” in connection with his account of turning down a role in Pirates of the Caribbean. Some other judgments about actors were associated with his 2022 memoir, Putting the Rabbit in the Hat: The Making of a Working-class Actor, and should not be mistaken for statements first made in this interview.

Us Weekly also reports that Cox spoke about Jeremy Strong and Daniel Day-Lewis. TheWrap reports his comments about Quentin Tarantino: “With a Quentin Tarantino film, what you see is all Quentin Tarantino. That’s not me. I don’t want to do that.” These remarks reflect Cox’s own stated views and preferences, not independent evaluations of the people discussed.
Why did Cox say he would keep speaking candidly?
TheWrap reports that Cox said his wife had cautioned him to be careful. He responded that he would be 80 that year and wanted to say what he wanted, adding, “I don’t know yet if it’s caused me problems.” His explanation gives context for the interview’s blunt tone without changing the distinction between his own opinions and established facts about the people he discussed.
