Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low (1963) takes the kidnapping plot of Ed McBain’s 1959 novel King’s Ransom and reshapes it into a story about class and inequality in modern Japan. The central dilemma remains: an industrialist is told that his child has been kidnapped, only to discover the abducted boy is his chauffeur’s son. But, as the British Film Institute puts it, the film takes the novel’s plot outline, “not the style and approach.”
Is High and Low based on a book?
Yes. High and Low adapts King’s Ransom, a crime novel published in 1959 by Evan Hunter under his pen name Ed McBain. The British Film Institute identifies the novel as the film’s source. Kurosawa directed the Japanese film, released in Japan on 1 March 1963; the BFI lists its runtime as 143 minutes.
The shared premise is a ransom crisis with a moral complication. An industrialist believes his own child has been taken, then learns the kidnapper has seized his chauffeur’s son instead. That change in whose child is at risk makes the ransom decision more than a question of money: it tests what responsibility the wealthy employer owes to a worker and his family.
What changes when Kurosawa moves the story to Japan?
The relocation lets the film make social divisions part of the story’s structure, not merely its background. The BFI describes Kurosawa and his scriptwriters as turning the novel’s outline into “something more ambiguous and complex; an anatomy of the inequalities in modern Japanese society.” That is the BFI’s characterization of the film, rather than a quotation from Kurosawa.

Criterion connects the Japanese title, Tengoku to jigoku (“Heaven and Hell”), to the contrast between affluent and needy worlds the story traverses. In that reading, the geography itself helps frame class: the police move through the space where those worlds collide. It is a useful interpretation of the film’s social map, not proof of a stated intention by Kurosawa.
How do the book and film differ in style?
The BFI’s feature, High and Low: the meticulous construction of Kurosawa’s kidnapping procedural, says the novel “provides the source but not the style and approach” of the film. In other words, the adaptation preserves the engine of the kidnapping plot while giving it a distinct cinematic form and a different emphasis.

The film’s procedural dimension places the kidnapping within an investigation, while its social focus gives the ransom dilemma consequences beyond the industrialist’s private finances. The available accounts support this broad comparison, but not a reliable scene-by-scene inventory of changes. Specific claims about matching characters, altered scenes, or a different ending require direct comparison of the novel and film.
What does the ransom dilemma mean in each work?
The premise turns an apparent personal emergency into a question of obligation. The industrialist’s child is not the child being held; the victim is the chauffeur’s son. That distinction forces the employer to weigh the chauffeur’s family’s peril against the financial stakes and risks of paying. In the film, the BFI’s description places this dilemma within a wider examination of inequality, making the divide between employer and employee central to how the crisis reads.

The sources establish the shared dilemma and the film’s broader social framing, but they do not establish exactly how the novel develops or resolves every moral question. It would therefore be misleading to claim, without consulting both works, that a particular character’s motives, decision, or ending is unchanged or reversed.

Which should you read or watch first?
Choose the novel first if you want to encounter McBain’s crime story on the page before seeing how Kurosawa reshapes its premise. Watch the film first if you are most interested in how a kidnapping procedural can also map social divisions. For a close comparison, treat them as distinct works built around the same central crisis, rather than assuming that the film reproduces the novel scene for scene.
