Kyōka Suigetsu is Sōsuke Aizen’s Zanpakutō; its Shikai ability, Kanzen Saimin, means “Complete Hypnosis” or “Perfect Hypnosis.” It alters what a target perceives after they have seen the sword’s Shikai release, allowing Aizen to mislead them about identities and events without changing physical reality.
Kyōka Suigetsu is the sword; Kanzen Saimin is its ability
The terms refer to different things: Kyōka Suigetsu is Aizen’s Zanpakutō, while Kanzen Saimin is the name given to its Shikai ability. Reference material describes that ability as hypnosis affecting the five senses. The effect is a fictional manipulation of a victim’s perception, not a transformation of the world itself. For exact wording and panel details, the licensed manga is the primary source.
How the hypnosis works
Once a person has seen Kyōka Suigetsu’s Shikai release, Aizen can make them misperceive what is happening. Because the deception can affect more than sight, a target may rely on misleading sensory information and mistake an ally, an attack, or Aizen himself for something else. The tactical advantage is that opponents can make decisions based on a false picture of events.
Seeing the release is the key condition
In the Soul Society reveal, Aizen explains that a person must see the Shikai release for the hypnosis to affect them. The scene connects this visual condition with Kaname Tōsen’s blindness: he would not be affected in the same way. This is the clearest stated way to avoid the visual trigger; it should not be treated as a complete list of every possible counter.

The false corpse shows its tactical impact
Aizen’s apparent corpse is a compact example of how the ability can misdirect a group. The deception leads Soul Society characters to misread what has happened and delays their recognition of the truth. Unohana notices that something is wrong, but does not immediately identify the cause. The distinction matters: an observer may detect an anomaly without understanding that hypnosis is responsible.
What the story does—and does not—establish
- Perception, not physical reality: The described power changes what victims perceive; it is not presented here as physically rewriting events.
- A setup condition: The Soul Society explanation ties the effect to seeing the release.
- Powerful, not a reason to assume omnipotence: The reference account allows for perceptive observers to notice discrepancies, even if they cannot immediately explain them.
These mechanics and scene details are summarized in secondary fan-reference accounts.
