The company said it had considered the decision over the previous year, but it did not name one definitive cause. Instead, Blizzard pointed to a different mix of game updates, convention appearances, esports events, livestreams and Warcraft anniversary celebrations.
What reason did Blizzard give for canceling BlizzCon 2024?
Blizzard’s announcement said: “After careful consideration over the last year, we at Blizzard have made the decision not to hold BlizzCon in 2024.” It also described the decision as one that “was not made lightly,” emphasizing that BlizzCon remained special to the company and its community.
That is the extent of the company’s stated explanation: Blizzard did not identify a single internal cause. Its post did not say the cancellation was due to finances, staffing, Microsoft’s ownership, or a lack of announcements. It framed the year as a different approach to sharing news and bringing players together. Read Blizzard’s April 25, 2024 announcement.
What did Blizzard plan instead?
Blizzard described several ways it would reach players and fans during 2024, while stressing that these events were not BlizzCon itself:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- More updates about the launches of World of Warcraft: The War Within and Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred.
- Appearances at industry conventions, including plans to discuss Gamescom.
- Overwatch Champions Series stops at DreamHack Dallas and DreamHack Stockholm.
- Multiple in-person events around the world for Warcraft’s 30th anniversary, alongside in-game celebrations.
- Livestreamed events connected to the industry.
Blizzard said it hoped these other activities would capture some of BlizzCon’s celebratory spirit, even though they were distinct from the convention.
Was BlizzCon canceled because there was nothing to announce?
Blizzard did not say that. The timing of the game releases offered a possible context: in same-day coverage, Blizzard Watch noted that the convention’s usual early-November timing would have put the World of Warcraft and Diablo IV expansions just after release, reducing their usefulness as major BlizzCon announcements. That was the outlet’s interpretation, not a cause Blizzard explicitly gave. Blizzard Watch’s April 25, 2024 report discusses that release-calendar context.

No. Blizzard later announced that BlizzCon would return to the Anaheim Convention Center on September 12–13, 2026.
