Carl Fogarty, Matt Smith and Tim Farron are all publicly associated with Blackburn Rovers, but their stories are documented in different ways. Smith and Fogarty have spoken about supporting the club in interviews; Farron is identified as a Rovers fan by supporters’ organizations. The available sources confirm these connections, not a definitive ranking of Blackburn’s most famous fans.
Matt Smith: a family connection to Rovers
Actor Matt Smith has described himself as a lifelong Blackburn Rovers fan. In an interview published by the club, he connected that support to his father, who was born and raised in Blackburn. Smith also recalled watching Rovers win the league with his father, making the club part of a family story as well as a football allegiance. Blackburn Rovers’ interview transcript is the source for those recollections.
His 2013 criticism was tied to a difficult period
Smith’s support has not meant silence when the club struggled. In March 2013, during a turbulent spell for Blackburn, BBC Sport reported his criticism of the team’s performance and ownership. Speaking to BBC Radio 5 live, he said: “We’re playing like a team without any verve or quality. Sort it out Shebby Singh, sort it out Venky’s – we are not happy.” He also called a performance against Millwall “woeful” and said, “It’s the first time I’ve been embarrassed at the way the team played.” These were remarks about the club’s circumstances at the time, not evidence of his current view. BBC Sport’s March 2013 report documents the comments.
Carl Fogarty: childhood memories near Ewood Park
Motorcycle racer Carl Fogarty told Shoot that he had lived on Livesey Branch Road opposite Blackburn’s ground as a child. In the interview, published during the 2014–15 season, he said he returned to football around the start of the Premier League. Asked how often he attended Rovers matches at that time, he answered: “I go occasionally and normally around three or four times a year.” That estimate describes his attendance when interviewed, not necessarily his present-day routine.

A standout memory—and an earlier Manchester United connection
Fogarty named Blackburn’s 2002 League Cup win over Tottenham as a high point for him as a supporter: “Probably when we won the League Cup in 2002 against Tottenham.” He also recalled supporting Manchester United when he was young, so his Rovers connection should not be presented as an exclusive allegiance throughout his life. His Shoot interview provides the first-person account; a 2007 fan blog had earlier noted the Manchester United association, but the later interview adds Fogarty’s own recollections.
Tim Farron: a supporter identified by Rovers groups
Tim Farron’s connection is supported by public fan activity rather than a detailed first-person interview in the available accounts. The Rovers Trust described him as a “committed Rovers fan” in its notice for the organization’s 2023 AGM, where it planned to show his Celebrity Mastermind performance, with Blackburn Rovers as his specialist subject. A BRFCS podcast listing also identifies an episode featuring Farron as a Rovers fan and says he reminisces about following the club over the years. These sources establish a credible association, but do not provide enough direct testimony to supply a personal origin story or extended quotation.

What the accounts show
| Person | Documented connection | Evidence in the cited accounts |
|---|---|---|
| Matt Smith | Family-rooted, lifelong support | First-person club interview; BBC Sport coverage of his 2013 comments |
| Carl Fogarty | Childhood proximity to the ground and supporter memories | First-person Shoot interview, including an attendance estimate and a remembered cup win |
| Tim Farron | Publicly identified as a committed Rovers fan | Rovers Trust AGM notice and a BRFCS podcast listing; no detailed direct transcript in these accounts |
The difference is chiefly in the evidence available: Smith and Fogarty recount their own experiences, while Farron’s connection is established through supporters’ organizations and a podcast listing. That distinction is useful when describing their stories, but it is not a measure of who is the “biggest” fan. The cited accounts confirm these three associations without establishing that they are Blackburn Rovers’ only, or objectively most famous, supporters.
