Luke Arnold said the cast and crew spent about two months filming Scrublands: Silver in Augusta, Western Australia, during winter 2024. The town stood in for fictional Port Silver, and Arnold described a welcoming community, striking coastal scenery and shifting weather that helped shape the season’s look. He shared those reflections in a PerthNow interview published on April 12, 2025, while back in Perth filming additional scenes.
Why was Luke Arnold filming in Augusta?
Augusta served as the location for Port Silver, the fictional coastal town at the centre of the second season of Scrublands. Screenwest announced in June 2024 that the season was filming there and adapting Chris Hammer’s novel Silver. Arnold, who plays investigative journalist Martin Scarsden, later recalled the experience in Clare Rigden’s April 12, 2025 PerthNow interview. Read the PerthNow interview and Screenwest’s filming announcement.
In the story, Martin returns after the events of season one. His partner Mandy, played by Bella Heathcote, becomes a murder-investigation suspect. Arnold said the second season gives more attention to Martin’s past and his relationship with Mandy. The television adaptation is based on Hammer’s novel, though the book and series should not be assumed to be identical.
How long did the production stay, and what was the town’s response?
Arnold said the production spent about two months in Augusta for the winter 2024 shoot. In the interview, he described a small town temporarily occupied by filming, and said the cast and crew fell in love with the place. Residents contributed as hosts, extras and local supporters, helping make the production feel close-knit rather than detached from the community.

How did Augusta shape the season’s look?
Arnold singled out the coastal landscape and winter conditions as creative assets. He described a silvery quality in the surroundings, alongside the lighthouse, jetties, river and ocean. The weather shifted during the shoot, offering a range of visual conditions for the series rather than a single, uniform coastal look.
