Broadway performer Bret Hanna-Shuford died on January 3, 2026, at age 46, his husband, Stephen Hanna, announced. Reports said Hanna-Shuford had been diagnosed in 2025 with T-cell lymphoma and hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH). His connection to Wicked was as a performer and understudy—not as the originator of either role named in coverage.
What was reported about his death and illness
BroadwayWorld reported on January 3, 2026, that Hanna-Shuford had died and that his husband shared the news. The family announcement, as reproduced by the outlet, said: “Bret Hanna-Shuford left this world peacefully with love surrounded by his family.” This was wording shared by his husband, not an independently verified medical account.
Obituaries reported that Hanna-Shuford was diagnosed in 2025 with T-cell lymphoma and HLH. Playbill described the lymphoma as peripheral T-cell lymphoma. These reports do not establish a more specific medical cause or mechanism of death.
His connection to Wicked
Broadway.com reported that Hanna-Shuford performed in Wicked and understudied the Wizard and Doctor Dillamond before Broadway’s 2020 shutdown. That distinction matters: the available account identifies understudy work and does not say he originated either role. Calling him a “Wicked star” without that context can overstate the nature of his credits.
