The $115 million figure was a forecast, not Superman’s final opening-weekend total. On July 9, 2025, Boxoffice Pro forecast a $115 million–$135 million domestic debut for July 11–13. The Associated Press later reported a $122 million U.S. and Canada studio estimate on Sunday, and box-office databases subsequently listed the domestic opening at $125,021,735.
What did the $115 million Superman headline mean?
It referred to Boxoffice Pro’s pre-release forecast for the film’s opening weekend in the domestic market—the United States and Canada—not to a worldwide total or a confirmed result. Published July 9, 2025, two days before the film’s U.S. opening, the preview put the expected range at $115 million to $135 million and said it anticipated at least $115 million. Boxoffice Pro’s July 9 preview also reported a much wider spread among panel estimates, from $90 million to $150 million.
That spread is a reminder that the headline described a projection amid uncertainty, not a guaranteed outcome. Boxoffice Pro cited the previous Man of Steel opening as a baseline and discussed reviews, awareness, marketing, and the film’s share of showtimes as considerations for its forecast. Those were factors in the preview’s reasoning, not proof that any one of them caused the eventual result.
Forecast, Sunday estimate, and recorded opening
The three figures refer to different reporting stages. The Sunday number was a studio estimate reported while the opening weekend was being assessed; the later database totals are recorded figures. They should not be treated as interchangeable.

| Reporting stage | Figure | Geography and source |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-release forecast, July 9, 2025 | $115 million–$135 million; at least $115 million expected | Domestic forecast from Boxoffice Pro |
| Sunday estimate, July 13, 2025 | $122 million | U.S. and Canada studio estimate reported by the Associated Press |
| Later recorded opening, July 11–13 | $125,021,735 | Domestic opening listed by Box Office Mojo and The Numbers |
Box Office Mojo lists 4,135 theaters for the opening. The Numbers records the film’s domestic theatrical gross at $354,223,803 and worldwide theatrical gross at $618,723,803. Those are broader theatrical totals, not opening-weekend figures.
Domestic, worldwide, and IMAX totals are different measures
The domestic opening figure covers the U.S. and Canada. It is not the same as the worldwide opening, which includes international markets and depends on the release windows in each country. The film opened in the United States on July 11, 2025, while some international markets began showing it July 9. The official film site identifies July 11 as the nationwide U.S. theater and IMAX release date.

IMAX’s figures count only tickets sold on IMAX screens, not all-format box office. On July 14, IMAX reported a $30.4 million global opening: $19.1 million in North America and $11.3 million internationally. IMAX said the North American amount represented 15.6% of the film’s domestic debut.
What the result says about the forecast
The later recorded domestic opening of $125,021,735 falls within Boxoffice Pro’s $115 million–$135 million forecast range. It also sits above the Sunday studio estimate of $122 million. The distinction is about timing and reporting status: one was a prediction, one an early estimate, and one the later figure recorded by box-office databases.

For context beyond opening weekend, The Numbers lists $354,223,803 in domestic theatrical gross and $618,723,803 worldwide. The opening-weekend figure should not be compared with either cumulative total without noting the different time periods.

The Associated Press framed the opening in the context of DC Studios’ attempt to rebuild its relationship with audiences. Warner Bros. chief of distribution Jeffrey Goldstein told the AP: “We needed to get the trust of the fanbase, and we didn’t have it. They were clear to us that we needed to take a step back and reinvent ourselves.” That comment describes the studio’s stated challenge; it does not, by itself, establish why individual moviegoers chose to see the film.
