Hollows may combine into a Gillian, and some can develop further; the process has limits and risks. Arrancar and Hollowfication are related transformations, not automatic ranks after Vasto Lorde.
What is the difference between a Hollow and a Menos?
VIZ’s official series synopsis describes a Hollow as “a malevolent lost soul.” In the story’s spiritual world, Hollows are corrupted souls. Menos are a more advanced grouping associated with Hollows devouring one another. The detailed mechanics below are described by the fan-maintained Bleach Wiki; VIZ’s synopsis does not lay out the taxonomy.
In that account, hunger drives Hollows to consume other Hollows. When many gather and devour collectively, they form a Gillian, the first Menos classification. The terms therefore are not interchangeable: a Gillian is a kind of Menos, while “Hollow” is the broader category.
How does the Menos progression work?
The sequence has three classifications: Gillian, Adjuchas, and Vasto Lorde. The reference describes progression as possible, not inevitable.

| Classification | Place in sequence | Identity and relative rarity | Progression caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gillian | First | A composite Menos; described as the commonest of the three. | Some may progress, but becoming an Adjuchas is not guaranteed. |
| Adjuchas | Second | More individualized than a Gillian; less common, according to the reference. | Must continue consuming Hollows to preserve individuality; regression to Gillian is possible. |
| Vasto Lorde | Highest | The highest class, described as extremely rare. | The reference does not present this as an inevitable outcome for Adjuchas. |
These classifications and their relative rarity summarize the fan-maintained reference, not a taxonomy set out in VIZ’s series synopsis.
Gillian: the first composite form
A Gillian forms when Hollows combine through collective devouring. The reference describes an individual will or identity as capable of emerging from that composite. When one will comes to dominate, a Gillian may develop into an Adjuchas.
Adjuchas: individuality that can be lost
Adjuchas are more individualized and capable than Gillian. Their status is precarious: the reference says they need to keep consuming Hollows to maintain their individuality. Without that, they can regress to Gillian. It also describes being partly consumed after an injury as a barrier to further evolution. Eating more Hollows alone does not guarantee reaching the highest class.

Vasto Lorde: the highest Menos class
Vasto Lorde is the highest classification in this sequence, and the reference describes its members as exceptionally rare. It is a class within the Menos hierarchy, not a universal final form that every Adjuchas reaches.
Why do “Menos Grande” and “Gillian” get confused?
The reference uses “Menos Grande” as an umbrella term for advanced Menos classifications, while “Gillian” names the first classification in the sequence. That distinction helps make sense of the terms, though readers may encounter different usage in dialogue or translations. In this article, “Menos” refers to the broader grouping and “Gillian” to its first form.
Are Arrancar and Hollowfication stages after Vasto Lorde?
No. Arrancar and Hollowfication are related to Hollows, but they are distinct transformations rather than automatic next steps in the Menos sequence. The cited lore reference treats Arrancar separately from the Gillian–Adjuchas–Vasto Lorde classifications. The official Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War character profiles use “Hollowfied” for certain Soul Reapers, illustrating that Hollowfication is not simply another Menos rank.

Does Ichigo have a Menos rank?
The official character profile identifies Ichigo as a Substitute Soul Reaper and places his story across the World of the Living, Soul Society, and Hueco Mundo. It does not classify his Hollow-related forms as Gillian, Adjuchas, or Vasto Lorde. A form’s appearance alone is not evidence that Ichigo underwent ordinary Menos evolution.

VIZ lists Bleach MASKED: Official Character Book 2 among its official books and special releases. The listing establishes that the book exists, but does not show that it is a dedicated guide to Hollow evolution.
