Blake Lively reportedly sought feedback from Ben Affleck and Matt Damon in May 2024, while It Ends With Us was being prepared for release. The Daily Beast’s account of emails says Lively asked Affleck for ideas on the film and that Damon offered help after Lively and Ryan Reynolds contacted him and his wife, Luciana. The reporting describes offers of feedback and support—not a confirmed intervention with the studio or a change to the film.
What did Blake Lively ask Ben Affleck for?
According to The Daily Beast’s reporting on the correspondence, Lively emailed Affleck in May 2024 to ask for ideas or notes on It Ends With Us, ahead of its planned August release. The outlet reported that she said she had rewritten and restructured the script, described the production as an upsetting experience, and invited his feedback while making clear there was no pressure to respond.
That description of the production is Lively’s reported characterization in the email, not an independently established finding. The reported request to Affleck was for creative feedback on the film.
What did Matt Damon say?
The Daily Beast reported that Ryan Reynolds contacted Damon and his wife, Luciana, asking whether their offer to watch the film was still open and seeking their perspective. Lively also wrote to the couple, according to the outlet. Damon reportedly replied, “We’ll give you any help we can,” and invited Lively to direct a future film at Artists Equity. Luciana Damon reportedly expressed sympathy.

The parties’ lawyers gave the messages different significance. The Associated Press reported that Justin Baldoni’s lawyers argued the communications showed Lively using influential friends to shape public perception. Lively’s attorney disputed their relevance to her workplace claims. Those were opposing litigation positions, not neutral findings about why Lively sought advice.
How the emails fit into the legal dispute
Lively alleged harassment and retaliation connected to the film’s production and promotion. Baldoni denied harassment and said her complaints were tied to a push for creative control. In April 2026, a judge dismissed Lively’s sexual-harassment claims while allowing some retaliation claims to proceed, according to the legal timeline reported by ABC News and Good Morning America.

The parties settled in May 2026, before the scheduled trial. The terms were not disclosed. As the Washington Post reported, a joint statement issued through the parties’ lawyers said: “The end product — the movie ‘It Ends With Us’ — is a source of pride to all of us who worked to bring it to life.” The settlement ended the civil case without a public adjudication of the remaining disputed claims; it is not proof for either side’s account.
