A report that she would make a surprise appearance spread widely before the convention’s final night, but her representative said she would not attend, and the outlet that published the report later corrected it. The convention ended without an unscheduled Beyoncé performance.
Was Beyoncé supposed to perform at the DNC?
There was no confirmed Beyoncé performance. The rumor centered on the convention’s final night, August 22, 2024, and gained momentum after TMZ reported that she would appear. Beyoncé’s representative said she would not attend, according to The Guardian. The Associated Press later recounted that TMZ corrected its report. The Associated Press reported the correction as: “To quote the great Beyoncé: We gotta lay our cards down, down, down … we got this one wrong.” That was TMZ’s wording, not a statement by Beyoncé.

There was no live appearance after Kamala Harris’s convention speech. “Freedom,” the Beyoncé song used by Harris’s campaign, played after the speech; the song’s presence was not a performance by its singer. The Axios account also reported that the rumored appearance did not happen.
Why did people expect a surprise appearance?
The campaign’s use of “Freedom” made Beyoncé a natural subject of speculation during a convention built around Harris’s nomination. Other perceived clues and social-media posts added to the buzz, but none established that Beyoncé had accepted an invitation or that organizers had confirmed a booking. The Los Angeles Times reported that speculation about a special guest drew attention alongside confirmed musical appearances.
#1 Best Overall
Coverage describes a rumor that moved through social accounts and media discussion after TMZ’s report. The Washington Post’s account traced how it circulated; The Guardian likewise described the buzz and its rapid fade. Repetition and excitement made the claim seem plausible to some observers, but they were not independent confirmation.

Some online reactions expressed disappointment, and coverage described memes and fan frustration. Rolling Stone Australia’s headline captured that tone, but “the internet” is not a measured group: the reporting does not establish how many people believed the rumor or how many were upset. Rolling Stone Australia and Scripps News reported disappointment, not a representative survey of public opinion.
Rank #2
Reaction inside the convention was not uniformly disappointed. TIME quoted Kristin Broner, a Florida attendee invited as a guest of delegates: “It would have been nice to have Beyoncé here, but it wasn’t about Beyoncé.” Some attendees emphasized the convention’s political purpose—the nomination of Harris—rather than the prospect of a celebrity performance. TIME’s report describes that range of views.
