CBS said a network programming timing error caused its April 14, 2024 broadcast of Billy Joel’s Madison Square Garden special to end about two minutes early in the Eastern and Central time zones. The interruption came during “Piano Man.” CBS apologized and announced a complete encore for April 19, 2024.
Why did CBS cut off Billy Joel?
CBS attributed the early ending to a network programming timing error. In a statement quoted by CBS News, CBS Vice President of Communications Julie Holland said the broadcast ended approximately two minutes early in the Eastern and Central time zones. The network apologized to Joel, his fans, its affiliated stations and viewers.
Did the broadcast cut off “Piano Man”?
Yes. CBS News reported that Joel was performing “Piano Man,” the concert’s final song, when local news began in some parts of the country. The timing error affected the CBS network airing in the Eastern and Central time zones; the cited reporting does not give a verified count of viewers, stations or markets affected.
When was the complete special rebroadcast?
CBS announced a full encore for Friday, April 19, 2024, at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The date and time were announced at the time; they do not establish a continuing rebroadcast schedule.
