Billie Eilish announced her third studio album, HIT ME HARD AND SOFT, on April 8, 2024. It was released globally on May 17, 2024, through Darkroom, Interscope Records and Universal Music Canada. Eilish and her brother FINNEAS wrote the album; FINNEAS produced it, and the official store says the pair wrote, recorded and produced it together in Los Angeles.
When was HIT ME HARD AND SOFT announced and released?
Universal Music Canada announced the album on April 8, 2024, identifying it as Eilish’s third studio album and setting its global release for May 17, 2024. The label described it as a diverse but cohesive collection intended to be heard from beginning to end. That is the label’s description, rather than a quote attributed directly to Eilish. Universal Music Canada’s announcement includes the release details.
Why did Billie Eilish release the album without advance singles?
Eilish said she did not want to release singles in advance because she wanted listeners to hear the album all at once. GRAMMY.com reproduced her Instagram caption: “Not doing singles i wanna give it to you all at once. Finneas and i truly could not be more proud of this album and we absolutely can’t wait for you to hear it. Love you love you love you.” The Associated Press also reported that she said she would not drop singles before the album. GRAMMY.com’s April 8, 2024 report and the Associated Press report covered the announcement.
In an Apple Music interview with Zane Lowe, as reported by GRAMMY.com, Eilish said, “We pretty much made that album.” The surrounding report describes Eilish and FINNEAS imagining a record made without worrying about other people’s ears or opinions; the short quote should be understood in that context.

What physical formats are documented?
The official product pages document a vinyl LP and a standard CD. Their format and packaging descriptions differ:
| Format | Documented packaging and materials | Official listing |
|---|---|---|
| Vinyl LP | The Billie Eilish store describes a 1LP gatefold with Eco-Mix vinyl made from recycled compound, including trimmed flash and leftover colors that otherwise could not be reused. It also describes FSC-certified recycled paperboard, plant-based ink and reusable recycled sleeves. | Billie Eilish Official Store |
| Standard CD | Interscope describes softpak packaging rather than a plastic jewel box, using certified stock, renewable fibers and up to 30% post-consumer recycled fibers. The listing describes the materials as recyclable. | Interscope Records |
The label’s April 2024 announcement said physical formats would use “100% recyclable materials.” The more specific descriptions above come from the respective product pages and apply to the listed editions; they are label and store claims, not independent measurements of environmental impact. They do not establish that every edition has identical materials. Current stock and prices can change, and the cited listings do not establish what is currently available from third-party retailers.

The dates have passed; the activation is historical context, not a current event. Spotify’s May 9, 2024 announcement describes the event.
