Her later update in March 2026 was encouraging, and Joel reportedly said in September 2026 that he was doing better after brain surgery. The words “committed to making a full recovery” reflect her hope and her account of his determination, not a prognosis from Joel’s doctors.
What has been reported about his health since then?
May 2025: NPH diagnosis and canceled performances
On May 23, 2025, Joel’s official website announced that he had been diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). The statement said the condition had been exacerbated by recent performances and had caused problems with his hearing, vision and balance. It also said he was receiving specific physical therapy under doctors’ instructions, and that scheduled concerts were canceled while he was advised to refrain from performing during recovery. Joel said, “I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience, and thank you for understanding.” Billy Joel’s official announcement

September 2026: Joel reportedly says he is doing better after surgery
Global News reported on September 10, 2026, and updated the story on September 11, that Joel said on SiriusXM’s Billy Joel channel he was doing better after brain surgery and that the surgery had relieved some NPH symptoms. What is normal pressure hydrocephalus?
ABC News and Good Morning America, citing the U.S. National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), describe NPH as an abnormal buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain. General symptoms can affect walking, bladder control, and thinking or reasoning. The report says surgery is the most common treatment and identifies shunt placement and endoscopic third ventriculostomy as options. That general information does not establish which procedure Joel had; the September 2026 report refers to brain surgery without naming it. ABC News / Good Morning America
