X-Men ’97 keeps the original animated series’ opening-title identity, but it is not simply a frame-for-frame copy. The revival brought back original title-sequence storyboard artist and director Larry Houston, used his old boards as a guide, and expanded at least one shot that had been shortened for the original broadcast.
How closely does the new opening follow the original?
Disney framed X-Men ’97 as a continuation of X-Men: The Animated Series, and its opening titles reflect that intention: the revival preserves a direct connection to the earlier show while making room for animation that could not be seen in the same form in the original broadcast. Brad Winderbaum, Marvel Studios’ Head of TV, Streaming, and Animation, described the production’s approach through a specific example: “We extended it and did this shot that matched [Houston’s] original storyboards from the nineties.”

What changed in the animation?
Rogue’s flip gets more room
The clearest documented comparison is Rogue’s flip. Winderbaum said the shot is much shorter in the old opening; in X-Men ’97, the team extended it to match Houston’s original storyboard. It is a concrete example of the revival restoring or realizing an earlier visual intention—not evidence that every shot was recreated or lengthened in the same way.
Original boards informed the revival
Supervising director Jake Castorena said Houston returned to help guide the sequence and brought in the storyboards he had made for the original titles. Castorena explained that some panels had not appeared in the original broadcast opening because the sequence was shortened for broadcast. In his TV Insider interview, Castorena called the boards “the cool part” of Houston’s return and described them as work from more than 30 years earlier.

That production history helps explain why the new titles can feel familiar without being identical: the artists were not limited to copying what viewers saw on television in the 1990s. They could also draw on material from the original planning stage.
Why the opening mattered to the production
Castorena emphasized that the title sequence and theme were central to making the revival feel like this particular series, saying: “It’s the main titles and the theme song. If we don’t do that, it’s not X-Men, it’s not this X-Men show.” The comment captures the balance at the heart of the opening: continuity is essential, but it does not require reproducing every broadcast frame exactly.

What can be said about the music?
Disney’s press kit credits the Newton Brothers with the music for X-Men ’97, and Disney Music Emporium’s official listing for the physical soundtrack includes a track titled “X-Men ’97 Theme.” Those credits and the track listing establish the revival’s musical contributors and release, but they do not, on their own, document a note-by-note or arrangement comparison with the original series’ theme. Disney’s press kit and the official soundtrack listing provide the available release details.

To judge details beyond the documented Rogue shot, compare the two sequences directly rather than assuming every apparent difference is a deliberate production change. Watch for how character images and visual ideas recur, where the revival gives an image more time, and how the music and timing feel in context. The available production accounts confirm Houston’s role and the expanded Rogue shot, but do not provide a complete shot-by-shot inventory or a technical analysis of the two theme arrangements.
