Bruce Springsteen criticized President Donald Trump and elected representatives during two separate Manchester concerts in May 2025. At the May 14 opening night of the Land of Hope & Dreams Tour, Springsteen said representatives had failed to protect Americans from what he called “the abuses of an unfit president and a rogue government.” He repeated the criticism at a May 17 show, using slightly different wording, according to the Los Angeles Times.
What Springsteen said at the May 14 tour opener
Springsteen and the E Street Band began the Land of Hope & Dreams Tour at Manchester’s Co-op Live on May 14, 2025. The official transcript of that concert records three spoken introductions before songs. In the remarks before “My City of Ruins,” Springsteen said: “A majority of our elected representatives have failed to protect the American people from the abuses of an unfit president and a rogue government.” Springsteen’s official transcript presents this as his political criticism, not as an independently established finding.

He also described the public as a final check on power: “The last check, the last check on power after the checks and balances of government have failed are the people, you and me.” Springsteen ended the opening-night remarks on a hopeful note, saying the America he had sung about “has been a beacon of hope and liberty for 250 years,” and invoking a reference he attributed to writer James Baldwin. He also said he had sung about America for “50 years.” Those figures were part of his speech, not independent measurements.
What changed in the May 17 speech
At the second Manchester concert, on Saturday, May 17, Springsteen returned to the same criticism. The Los Angeles Times reported that his speech lasted about three minutes and that he repeated many of his earlier points. Its quotation of the later speech reads: “The majority of our elected representatives have utterly failed to protect the American people from the abuses of an unfit president and a rogue government.” The newspaper’s report says the remarks came after Trump attacked Springsteen in a Truth Social post the previous day, May 16.

The distinction matters: “utterly” appears in the newspaper’s account of May 17, not in the official transcript of May 14. The two versions should not be blended or attributed to the wrong concert.

“Unfit president” was Springsteen’s characterization of Trump. He used it while criticizing the administration and arguing that elected representatives had not protected the American people. It is a political opinion expressed in a concert speech, not a neutral assessment or a reported legal determination.

The official transcript’s wider passage connects the criticism to Springsteen’s view that citizens are a check on power when government checks and balances fail. The Los Angeles Times observed applause and shouts of support during the later speech; that describes audible reactions at the event, not the views of every person in the crowd.
