Shields’s memoir and her 2014 interview with PEOPLE place their relationship in 1992, following her breakup with Princeton boyfriend Dean Cain. The Guardian later described Neeson as a brief relationship after Shields’s Princeton years and before she met Andre Agassi in 1993. The available reporting does not establish the exact start or end dates, or how and where the pair first met.

According to Shields’s recollection, Neeson wooed her with his Irish brogue, poetry and inexpensive pinot grigio. She said the relationship became serious after about three months and that Neeson proposed without a ring.
Christmas 1992: the promised call
Shields recalled spending Christmas in New York with Neeson and her mother, Teri. Neeson said he needed to fly to Los Angeles to check on his house. Shields asked him to call when he arrived; according to her account, he did not.

The second proposal and Shields’s decision
Shields told PEOPLE that Neeson returned and proposed again before beginning the Broadway play Anna Christie. She declined, saying she expected he would fall in love with his next leading lady. PEOPLE identifies that actress as Natasha Richardson.
What happened after Shields and Neeson?
Neeson and Richardson’s relationship followed his brief relationship with Shields. Neeson and Richardson married in 1994. Shields’s prediction about his next leading lady was her explanation for declining the proposal; the reported chronology does not establish that this was the reason their earlier relationship ended.
