What happened at Bill Maher’s White House dinner with Trump?
Maher met Donald Trump for dinner at the White House on March 31, 2025. The Washington Post reported that musician Kid Rock brokered the meeting. Maher later described hours of conversation, including discussion of policy, humor and a personal tour of the White House. The Washington Post’s account put the dinner in the context of the response to Maher’s public comments about it.
Maher’s favorable account
On Real Time on April 11, Maher called Trump “gracious” and “much more self-aware than he lets on.” He said: “Everything I’ve ever not liked about him was – I swear to God – absent, at least on this night with this guy.”
Maher framed the dinner as a worthwhile conversation with a political opponent and said his description was honest. The fact that he enjoyed the encounter, however, does not by itself establish that it changed his view of Trump’s public conduct.

What did Larry David say about Bill Maher’s Trump dinner?
David’s satirical New York Times essay, “My Dinner With Adolf,” appeared on April 21, 2025. It imagines a critic of Hitler accepting a dinner invitation and being surprised by the dictator’s warmth in private. The Guardian reported that the essay echoed the structure and phrasing of Maher’s account of his dinner with Trump, but David did not name Maher.
David’s satire challenged the idea that a pleasant personal encounter should lead a critic to lose sight of a leader’s public conduct. It used an imagined Hitler dinner to make that point; it was not a factual account of a meeting between David and Hitler, nor did the essay explicitly identify Maher as its subject.

Patrick Healy, the New York Times deputy opinion editor, told the Guardian: “Larry’s piece is not equating Trump with Hitler. It is about seeing people for who they really are and not losing sight of that.”
Why did Bill Maher criticize Larry David’s essay?
Maher responded on Piers Morgan Uncensored on April 24. He objected to the Hitler comparison, saying it was “kind of insulting to 6 million dead Jews” and that Hitler had “really kind of got to stay in his own place. He is the GOAT of evil.” His criticism was about the analogy’s use, rather than a denial that David was writing satire.

Maher also defended his account of the dinner and his prior criticism of Trump. As quoted by the Guardian, he said: “Nobody has been harder, and more prescient, I must say, about Donald Trump than me. I don’t need to be lectured on who Donald Trump is. Just the fact that I met him in person didn’t change that. The fact that I reported honestly is not a sin either.”
The disagreement in context
The dispute turned on three different questions, not a shared conclusion about what the dinner proved:

- Engagement: Maher presented meeting a political opponent as worthwhile; David’s satire questioned the significance a critic should assign to a cordial private encounter.
- Private warmth and public judgment: Maher described how Trump treated him that evening. David’s essay pressed the broader point that a pleasant personal interaction need not displace judgment of public conduct.
- Historical analogy: Maher argued that invoking Hitler was offensive and distorted the comparison. Healy’s explanation of the essay was that it was not equating Trump with Hitler.
Neither interpretation establishes what political effect the dinner had. They are the arguments Maher and David’s essay advanced about personal encounters, political criticism and historical comparison.

At first, Maher said the essay was not his favorite moment in their friendship, but he did not want to make the conflict personal and said he could talk with David. TV Insider reported those remarks on April 25, 2025.

In an interview with The Free Press’s Maya Sulkin, reported by The Independent on December 24, 2025, Maher said David was “not really my friend anymore” and that they had not spoken after the essay. Maher also called the piece “a great clapback.” That is Maher’s account of their relationship as of that interview; the reporting cited here does not provide a separate account from David.
How widely did Maher’s dinner comments circulate?
The Washington Post reported on April 14, 2025, that Elon Musk had shared a video of Maher’s remarks and that it had received more than 55 million views as of that Monday morning. That is a dated view count for a video on a particular platform, not a current total or evidence of what viewers thought.
