In an interview, Anansa Sims says her mother, Beverly Johnson, taught her perseverance and professionalism, while Johnson says she learned from Sims’s determination to define her own modeling path. Their advice also touches on communication in relationships and openness with children.
Communication means changing the pattern
Sims says communication becomes more important with age and that withholding it does not resolve conflict. “The older you get, the more you see that communication really is key, and nothing gets solved with the silent treatment,” she says.
She describes recurring conflict as a “dance,” adding: “And in order to change the dance, you have to stop dancing.” The point is personal advice from Sims: when a familiar cycle keeps repeating, she believes someone has to choose a different response.
Perseverance through difficult periods
Sims credits Johnson with encouraging her to recover from setbacks in relationships and parenting rather than give up. “What my mom taught me is to just pick myself up, dust myself, and just keep going,” Sims says.

Johnson, in turn, views challenges as part of moving toward a next step. “I do know the reason why you have challenges is because you’re trying to go to the next step and you have to go through these challenges to get there,” she says. These are their own ways of making sense of hardship, not a promise that every difficulty leads to a particular outcome.
Professionalism and defining your own path
Sims says Johnson taught her practical habits of professional conduct: arriving on time and ready to work. “My mom taught me a lot about just being a professional,” Sims says.

Johnson also recalls learning from Sims’s confidence about her appearance and career. Sims told her she would not pursue straight-size modeling and would not let other people dictate how she should look. Their exchange shows advice moving in both directions: Johnson passed on work habits, while Sims modeled self-definition.

Sims contrasts her more stay-at-home role as a parent with Johnson’s experience as a working mother. She says she tries to encourage open communication with her children. Johnson describes seeing her daughter face the challenges of parenting from a new perspective.

Their accounts do not prescribe one right division of work or parenting. Instead, they describe distinct experiences and emphasize talking openly with children.
