The Beyoncé “Freedom” ad at the 2024 Democratic National Convention was a Harris-Walz campaign spot, not a live performance: it paired an a cappella version of the song with narration by actor Jeffrey Wright. “Freedom” appears on Beyoncé’s 2016 album Lemonade.
What was the ‘Freedom’ ad at the DNC?
During convention week in August 2024, the Harris-Walz campaign unveiled an ad built around an a cappella version of “Freedom.” Jeffrey Wright narrated the spot, which was part of the campaign’s convention programming. The Guardian reported that “Freedom” had become a recurring, prominent part of the campaign’s messaging.

The song’s use in an ad should not be confused with a Beyoncé appearance at the convention. Beyoncé did not perform at the DNC; reports that she might appear were rumors, as CNN’s August 24, 2024 transcript noted.
How the DNC ad differed from the campaign’s July video
The convention-week spot was not the campaign’s first use of the song. On July 25, 2024, after Kamala Harris entered the presidential race, the campaign released its first official campaign video. That earlier video opened with the beginning of “Freedom” and carried the message “We choose freedom,” according to The Guardian.

The two videos marked separate moments in the campaign. The July video used the song’s opening; the later ad used an a cappella arrangement and Wright’s narration.
What is Beyoncé’s ‘Freedom’ from?
“Freedom” is a track on Beyoncé’s 2016 album Lemonade. The Associated Press reported that an unnamed campaign official confirmed Beyoncé gave Harris permission to use the song. That confirmation was attributed to the campaign source, not presented as a public statement from Beyoncé.

Why the ad prompted questions about Beyoncé
The song’s prominent role in the campaign and the convention-week timing fueled expectations that Beyoncé might appear at the DNC. She did not. The ad featured her music, but the sources do not describe it as a Beyoncé performance or an appearance by the singer.
Beyoncé later appeared at a Harris campaign rally in Houston. The Associated Press reported that she said, “I’m not here as a celebrity, I’m not here as a politician. I’m here as a mother.” Those remarks were made at the later rally, not about the DNC ad.
