Leonardo DiCaprio and Fantasia Barrino were among the most discussed acting omissions from the 2024 Oscar nominations; Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig also missed expected individual recognition for Barbie. These are critical descriptions, not official Academy findings. The nominations honored films released in 2023, were announced January 23, 2024, and led to the ceremony on March 10.
What counts as a 2024 Oscar snub?
The Academy publishes nominees, not snubs. Calling an omission a snub is an editorial judgment about an expected or prominent contender who did not make the final list. The Academy’s nomination announcement explains that most categories are selected by members of the corresponding branch, while all voting members may nominate films for best picture. That process produces the official field; media coverage and critics supply the “snub” label.
The examples below emphasize the visibility of the omitted contender, the nominees who were selected, contemporaneous coverage, and whether the film received recognition elsewhere. “Biggest” is therefore a judgment, not a formal ranking by the Academy.
The most talked-about omissions
Leonardo DiCaprio, Killers of the Flower Moon — lead actor
DiCaprio was not nominated for lead actor, an omission widely discussed in coverage of the announcement. The five nominees were Bradley Cooper for Maestro, Colman Domingo for Rustin, Paul Giamatti for The Holdovers, Cillian Murphy for Oppenheimer, and Jeffrey Wright for American Fiction.

The film was nominated for best picture, Martin Scorsese for director, Lily Gladstone for lead actress, and Robert De Niro for supporting actor, among other recognition. The omission was specifically DiCaprio’s lead-actor nomination.
Fantasia Barrino, The Color Purple — lead actress
Barrino missed the lead-actress lineup. The five nominees were Annette Bening for Nyad, Lily Gladstone for Killers of the Flower Moon, Sandra Hüller for Anatomy of a Fall, Carey Mulligan for Maestro, and Emma Stone for Poor Things. Contemporary coverage also noted that Taraji P. Henson was left out.
The Color Purple did receive an acting nomination: Danielle Brooks was nominated for supporting actress. Barrino’s omission should not be confused with a lack of recognition for the entire cast or film.
Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig, Barbie — lead actress and director
Robbie did not receive a lead-actress nomination, and Gerwig was omitted from the director category. Their absences drew attention because Barbie was a prominent contender, but the film was far from shut out: it received a best-picture nomination, as well as nominations for supporting actor Ryan Gosling, supporting actress America Ferrera, and adapted screenplay for Gerwig and Noah Baumbach.

The distinction is between the film’s broad recognition and two individual nominations that many commentators expected. The Academy’s list confirms both the omissions and the nominations the movie did receive.

These names appeared in contemporary discussions of the nomination omissions. As with the better-known cases, “snub” describes the coverage or an editorial assessment, not an Academy category or ruling.

A nomination list is a finite selection, and an omitted performer can be a headline even when their film has nominations in other categories. To assess any claim of a snub, separate three questions: who was left out, who was selected instead, and whether the film received recognition elsewhere. That keeps the conversation anchored to the actual nominee list rather than treating an omission as proof that a film or performance was ignored altogether.
