Bella Thorne said she asked for no retouching on a nude photo from a 2017 GQ Mexico shoot because she wanted to speak openly about her insecurities. She described those feelings as natural and human, and hoped that talking about them would help others feel less alone.
What was the photo shoot?
Thorne posed nude for GQ Mexico in a shoot reported in September 2017. Teen Vogue credited photographer Michael Schwartz. Thorne shared an image from the shoot and said she had specifically asked for it not to be retouched. Teen Vogue’s report covered the shoot, while Seventeen and Allure reported her explanation.
Why did Bella Thorne ask for no retouching?
Her request was part of a message about body insecurities, not a claim that she had none. In the Instagram caption reproduced by Seventeen, she wrote: “Lemme tell you I have insecurities, about pretty much everything. That’s natural & that’s human.” She also said she wished more people would discuss their insecurities so others could know they were not alone, as Allure reproduced in its account.
The point was to show an unretouched image while acknowledging that insecurity is a common human experience. The image itself does not prove that body-image concerns disappear, or that a single photo can resolve them.

How this differs from the 2019 photo-hacking story
The 2017 magazine shoot is separate from a 2019 incident involving a hacker who threatened to release private photos. In 2019, Thorne posted the images herself in response to the threat. The Washington Post reported on the incident and the criticism she received for taking nude photos; Allure later covered her objection to that response. The Washington Post’s report and Allure’s follow-up describe that distinct privacy violation and response.
