Rather than treating its low-budget, high-shock-value films as a joke, it follows four directors as they revisit their careers and make new short films. Bala described the guiding idea as “not to make fun, but to understand.”
What is Cinema Marte Dum Tak about?
The series looks at a corner of Hindi cinema associated with films made on limited budgets and designed for maximum shock. Its focus is not only the old movies: it brings four filmmakers back into a working environment, where they make new short films while reflecting on their pasts. The series was created by Vasan Bala and has six parts. Scroll.in’s January 2023 interview with Bala describes the scene as flourishing from the 1990s into the 2000s.
Which directors does the series follow?
Cinema Marte Dum Tak follows J Neelam, Dilip Gulati, Vinod Talwar and Kishan Shah. They look back on their careers and return to filmmaking to create new short films. The setup gives the series a way to observe them at work, rather than relying only on interviews about films made long ago.
Why did Vasan Bala want to understand rather than ridicule the filmmakers?
Bala told Scroll.in that the filmmakers had lived difficult lives and that the series did not want to approach them through the familiar impulse to laugh at B-movies. The team sought to build trust and used the directors’ work on new films to draw out their stories and personalities. As Bala put it, “Filmmakers are in their element only when they are working.”

That approach shapes the series’ point of view: the directors are not presented only as figures of kitsch, but as people with histories and a craft. It does not mean the films themselves are beyond criticism; it means the series chose to prioritize understanding the people who made them.
How does the series handle its films’ depictions of women?
The series’ approach has a meaningful tension. In the Scroll.in interview, Bala said the creators chose not to impose an explicit moral analysis of the directors’ depictions of women, including rape scenes, or to lecture the filmmakers. He said they wanted viewers to experience discomfort and understanding, rather than consume the material as expected kitsch entertainment.
That is Bala’s explanation of the editorial choice, not evidence that the series resolves the criticism. Viewers may find the absence of a more direct examination limiting, particularly given the subject matter. The distinction matters: a stated intention to understand the filmmakers does not itself answer questions about how their films portray women.

The January 2023 interview said that including the new films as platform extras was still under discussion at that time. It does not establish whether they were later made available separately. The interview also does not confirm current Amazon Prime Video availability by country, so check the service in your region for the latest listing.
