The right drum set bar chimes depend on the sound and setup you want: Meinl’s options range from a 12-bar model described for subtle, high-pitched accents to a 33-bar high-frequency model described as especially bright, while LP offers a 36-bar studio model and a 72-bar double-row model. These are manufacturer descriptions, not results of a head-to-head listening test. Compare each model’s published configuration, sound role, and hardware before choosing.
What bar chimes do in a drum set
Bar chimes are a percussion effect used to accent a moment or mark a transition between musical passages. Meinl describes them as an effect or transition instrument, rather than a substitute for the rest of a drum or percussion setup. They are distinct from wind chimes and tubular bells.

The sound descriptions below come from the manufacturers. Bar count and row layout describe configuration; a higher count is not, by itself, evidence of a better sound or a better fit.

Choose by sound role and setup
For a compact, subtle accent
The 12-bar Meinl CH12 is the smallest listed configuration here. Meinl describes it as high-pitched and suitable for subtle accents; that description can help narrow the choice if you want a restrained chime part rather than a broad sweep.

For a fuller single-row option
Meinl describes the 27-bar CH27 as full, rich, and delicate. Its single-row layout offers a different configuration from LP’s double-row model; the published bar count alone does not establish how wide it will sit in a particular setup.
For prominent upper overtones
Meinl positions the 33-bar CH33HF as very bright, with a pronounced upper overtone spectrum. Treat this as the manufacturer’s tonal description, not a measured guarantee in every room or mix.

For studio control
LP says its 36-bar Studio Bar Chimes are useful when shorter sustain and added control are desired. This positioning may be relevant when lingering resonance is less desirable, though the product description does not quantify sustain or specify a recording method.
For a double-row arrangement
LP’s 72-bar model is the double-row option in this comparison. LP describes it as bright and tonally diverse. Consider whether the double-row arrangement suits your playing and available space; more bars do not automatically mean a better match.

Check mounting and included hardware
Mounting details are model-specific. Meinl lists a solid wood bracket for the CH12 and CH27, and a holder and striker with the CH33HF. Meinl catalog material describes aluminum-alloy bars suspended with nylon cord, but the exact details may vary by model. LP’s cited product pages establish the alloy and model configuration, but do not settle compatibility with every stand, rack, or L-rod.
- Confirm what bracket, holder, striker, or other hardware is included on the current manufacturer listing.
- Check the mounting method and dimensions against the stand or rack you intend to use.
- Do not assume a chime will fit every percussion mount; verify compatibility for the specific model.
What “best” means for these choices
There is no universal winner established by the manufacturers’ specifications. Select by the role you need—subtle accent, fuller single row, bright upper overtones, shorter sustain, or double-row tonal range—and by whether the mounting hardware works with your setup. The sound descriptions are manufacturer claims; no independent comparative listening or hands-on test is represented here.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- MADE IN USA: we're a small team hand making chimes at our independently owned and operated shop in Nashville, Tennessee; when it comes to building outstanding quality instruments while supporting American jobs, we're all in
- WHY IT MATTERS: having 100% control over design and production lets us focus on first-class construction with locally sourced materials, yielding the purest sounding chimes; our instruments are highly intentional, professional, and long-lasting
- THE BARS: we only use custom mill bars, certified to spec and quality tested; our aluminum/titanium alloy is heat-treated in house for 8 hours and tuned by ear; we never paint, tint, dip, anodize or plate the bars, as this adversely affects sound
- THE MANTLE: selections consist of black walnut or white ash sourced from managed forests in the middle Tennessee region; boards are hand picked from kiln-dried stock, then cut, sanded (16 times), and completed with a hand rubbed oil finish
- NO PLASTIC TIES: bars are hand tied to the mantle with TreeWorks' CordLoc, a select fiber composition braided for extraordinary strength; like mini repelling rope, CordLoc prevents bars from ripping off (a common problem with plastic clothing ties)
