Robert Downey Jr. plays Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, after playing Tony Stark, the Iron Man, in earlier Marvel films. That is why Doom looks familiar to moviegoers: the same actor plays both characters. The story has not yet explained why Doom has Stark’s face.
Why does Doctor Doom look like Iron Man?
Because both roles are played by Robert Downey Jr. Marvel announced his return as Victor von Doom—Doctor Doom—at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2024. Downey had previously played Tony Stark, whose armored identity is Iron Man.
At the announcement, Downey joked, “New mask, same task.” The line acknowledged his return to Marvel in a new role; it did not establish a plot connection between Doom and Stark. D23’s report of the announcement also quoted director Joe Russo describing the casting as a way to explore the possibilities of the multiverse.
Is Doctor Doom a Tony Stark variant?
That has not been confirmed. The multiverse was part of how the filmmakers discussed Downey’s casting, but that alone does not show that Doom is a version of Tony Stark—or explain why the two characters share a face. The confirmed fact is that Downey plays Doom; a specific identity or multiverse explanation remains undisclosed.

Asked about Doom and Tony looking the same, Joe Russo said in an interview published by GamesRadar on July 14, 2026: “I’m not going to give away anything. It will all make sense when you watch the movies.” That promises an explanation in the films, but does not reveal what it is. GamesRadar’s report also mentions Doctor Doom merchandise, including a Funko figure, but merchandise does not answer the story question.
