Asha is a 2025 Marathi drama about Malti, an ASHA community health worker trying to support a pregnant woman while confronting resistance at home. Rinku Rajguru gives the film its most compelling presence: reviewers praise her performance and the warmth and humor she brings, even as they question whether the screenplay looks deeply enough at the pressures facing its characters.
What is Asha about?
Directed by Deepak Balu Patil, Asha stars Rinku Rajguru as Malti, an ASHA worker who tries to help Kamla, a pregnant woman facing pressure from her family. Malti also meets resistance in her own household. The story connects reproductive-health decisions with the family and social expectations shaping women’s lives.
Here, “ASHA” refers to the community health worker role. Apple TV’s India listing describes Malti as a devoted wife and ASHA worker determined to challenge patriarchy. The listing identifies the film as a 2025 Indian drama with Marathi audio and English (United States) SDH subtitles: Apple TV.
Why Rinku Rajguru is the film’s ray of hope
Rajguru’s Malti is the clearest reason to watch. In her Scroll review, Nandini Ramnath wrote, “Rinku Rajguru’s irresistible sincerity and infectious enthusiasm go a long way in making Asha work.” Scroll also highlights the humor and appeal of the characters. Its assessment is not that the film’s subject lacks importance, but that the performance and lively moments do more than the simplified, persistently upbeat treatment around them.

Maharashtra Times also praises the performances, while faulting the screenplay for repetition and predictability, and criticizing the pacing and limited depth. These are separate critics’ assessments, not a single consensus: both see acting as a strength, while their criticisms focus on how fully the story develops its material. How deeply does the film examine ASHA workers’ work?
The subject gives Asha a documentary-adjacent interest, but a drama about an ASHA worker should not be mistaken for a comprehensive account of the work. Scroll’s review argues that the film underrepresents conditions including excessive workloads and delayed payments, and that its idealized, upbeat approach limits its examination of the role. The available reviews do not establish that the film offers a full picture of ASHA volunteers’ working lives.

The film’s conflict around Kamla also raises questions about family pressure and women’s reproductive health. The reviews describe the story’s concern with these issues, but the criticism of repetition and limited screenplay depth suggests that viewers seeking a sustained, detailed exploration may find the treatment too light.

Should you watch Asha?
Choose it for Rajguru’s performance, the warmth and humor noted by reviewers, and a story that places a community health worker and reproductive-health pressures at its center. Go in with measured expectations if you want a probing account of ASHA workers’ labor or a tightly developed screenplay: the reviews’ main reservations concern idealization, repetition, pacing and depth.
