Developed with Breakthrough T1D, formerly JDRF, the doll depicts a continuous glucose monitor, an insulin pump and a phone showing a glucose-monitoring app. Mattel presents it as an inclusion and storytelling release—not as medical guidance or a depiction of every person’s experience with T1D.
What the doll includes
Mattel’s product page names the doll “Barbie Fashionistas Doll #242 Barbie Doll With Type 1 Diabetes in Polka Dot Outfit With Accessories.” Its depicted diabetes-management items are a continuous glucose monitor (CGM), an insulin pump and a phone displaying a CGM app. A heart-shaped piece of medical tape and a blue purse for essentials complete the accessories. These are toy representations described by Mattel, not instructions for managing diabetes.
The outfit is blue with polka dots. Mattel says the circles and blue reference diabetes-awareness symbols. The package contents are one doll, one outfit, one pair of shoes and one accessory; the product FAQ identifies the purse as that accessory. See Mattel’s product listing.
Why Mattel made the doll with Breakthrough T1D
Mattel developed the doll in partnership with Breakthrough T1D, a Type 1 diabetes research and advocacy organization formerly known as JDRF. The Associated Press reported that the doll was introduced at Breakthrough T1D’s 2025 Children’s Congress in Washington, D.C. The event was a launch setting, not a clinical evaluation of the toy.

“Visibility matters for everyone facing Type 1 diabetes,” said Emily Mazreku, Breakthrough T1D’s director of marketing strategy, according to the AP. She added that “it means everything to have Barbie helping the world see T1D and the incredible people who live with it.” Read the Associated Press report.

What the representation does—and does not—say
The doll makes visible some devices and accessories associated with T1D, offering a way for children and families to encounter that representation in play. It should not be read as a complete account of living with the condition: people’s experiences and equipment vary. The product is not medical instruction, and its accessories should not be treated as treatment recommendations.
For context, the AP cited CDC estimates that in 2021, 38.4 million Americans of all ages—about 11.6% of the U.S. population—had diabetes, including about 2 million people with Type 1 diabetes and roughly 304,000 children and teens under 20. Those are historical estimates for 2021, not a current prevalence figure.
