He was also uploading music online. The contrast was not a sudden leap from nowhere: ordinary work and study continued as his songs began attracting attention.
Where Bad Bunny grew up
Bad Bunny grew up in Almirante Sur, in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico. His early life was rooted in the island, well before his music reached a global audience. Pitchfork’s profile describes his upbringing and the work-and-study routine he had before fame.

He studied and worked while pursuing music
College and a supermarket job
Martínez Ocasio studied audiovisual communications at the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo while working at a local Econo supermarket, where he bagged groceries. That meant his musical ambitions developed alongside familiar obligations: classes and shifts rather than an established star platform. Penguin Random House’s biography of Bad Bunny also describes his studies and part-time supermarket work.
Singing while gathering carts
Delza Vélez, Econo’s head of human resources, recalled that he would sing while collecting shopping carts in the parking lot. As she told the Associated Press: “He always liked to go to the parking lot to gather the shopping carts because it seemed that he felt free there and would sing.” The AP report places that recollection in the context of his time at Econo.

How online uploads led to producer interest
While he still had the supermarket job, Bad Bunny shared music online. Attention around his song “Diles” brought calls from producers in 2016, according to Biography.com’s account. The attention reached him while he was at work; the AP reports that he left the supermarket job that year.
That sequence helps explain the transition without reducing it to one viral moment. He was studying, working, and putting music online; as interest grew, producer calls opened a path beyond the routine he had known. The available accounts establish those milestones, but do not provide a detailed first-person narrative of every step in his move from grocery work to a music career.
