As a child, he had watched Back to the Future; on the set of Back to the Future Part II, he found himself in the sequel’s version of the future. In a 2021 interview excerpt, he described that collision between watching a film and physically taking part in one as “completely mind-blowing.”
Wood’s small role placed him inside a familiar movie world
In Back to the Future Part II, Wood appears briefly as the “Video Game Boy” at Cafe ’80s, a diner set in the film’s 2015. Marty McFly comes across two boys struggling with the Wild Gunman arcade game and shows them how to play. Gizmodo identifies Wood as the boy who asks, “You mean you have to use your hands?”; John Thornton played the other boy.
The scene is brief, but its setting mattered to Wood. He had watched the original Back to the Future growing up, and now he was standing in the sequel’s imagined world as part of a film production.
Why the experience felt “completely mind-blowing”
In excerpts from Deadline’s The Film That Lit My Fuse, reproduced by Gizmodo, Wood recalled how the experience connected his understanding of cinema to something he was doing in real life:
#1 Best Overall
“That was wild because it took what I understood about cinema and put it into this very real realm. And I think that may actually sort of be the first time that I think I was able to reference that based on what I had seen, to what I was physically doing,”
He then described the particular jolt of entering a world he had known from the screen: “But when it’s referencing a movie that I grew up watching and suddenly I’m in that environment, was completely mind-blowing.” The experience made film feel less like something he only watched and more like something he could physically do—and potentially build a life around.

Wood had also discussed the job in a Reddit AMA on June 20, 2013. He said he had done commercials before landing his first film role, a small part in Back to the Future Part II, and described the experience as “mindblowing to a 8 year old.”

That earlier first-person account supports the basic chronology and the importance he attached to the role. It is separate from the later interview excerpts: the 2013 comment gives his age-centered recollection, while the 2021 account explains what it meant to move from watching a film to being physically present in its world.
