Public accounts document their lives and musical work unevenly, so some family details—especially birth dates and paternity—need careful attribution.
Who were Aretha Franklin’s four sons?
Franklin’s sons were Clarence, Edward, Ted White Jr. and Kecalf Cunningham. The names Teddy Richards and Kecalf Franklin also appear in public coverage: Teddy Richards is Ted White Jr.’s professional name, while Kecalf has been referred to by his mother’s surname.
Clarence Franklin
KidsCo’s 2025 explainer, updated in August 2026, gives Clarence’s birth date as January 28, 1955. That date is not consistent across sources: a Detroit Historical Society collection record lists him as born in 1957. Because the accounts conflict, the year should not be treated as settled without further primary documentation.
Reports about Franklin’s handwritten documents say they named Edward Jordan as Clarence’s father. This is an attribution to what those documents say, not a DNA-confirmed finding. Coverage of the documents also says Clarence lived under guardianship and that the papers addressed his support; it does not establish a diagnosis, his current circumstances, or his personal wishes.

Edward Franklin
KidsCo gives Edward’s birth date as August 31, 1957, and identifies Edward Jordan as his father. The Detroit Historical Society record instead lists Edward as born in 1959, so the sources do not agree on his birth year. The paternity account is likewise reported from Franklin’s handwritten documents rather than presented as DNA-confirmed.
Public reporting describes Edward performing gospel music. The available coverage does not establish a complete discography or a current performance schedule, so it is not possible to summarize his musical output comprehensively.

Ted White Jr., professionally known as Teddy Richards
Ted White Jr. is the son of Aretha Franklin and Ted White Sr. KidsCo gives his birth month as February 1964. He is professionally known as Teddy Richards, a distinction that resolves a common source of confusion: they are not two different sons.
KidsCo relays information from Richards’s official biography describing him as a singer, songwriter, guitarist and producer, and says he played guitar in his mother’s band for 30 years. These are reported career details, not a complete account of his work or a statement about his current schedule.

Kecalf Cunningham
KidsCo gives Kecalf’s birth month as April 1970 and identifies Ken Cunningham as his father. Public coverage also uses the name Kecalf Franklin. Reporting describes him as a musical performer, but the available accounts do not support a fuller or current career history.
What the handwritten-will dispute established
The family received public attention during a dispute over handwritten wills, but that legal episode is only one part of the sons’ stories. Reporting says Edward and Kecalf supported a 2014 document, while Teddy supported a 2010 document. In July 2023, a jury found the 2014 handwritten document valid. That verdict resolved which document was valid in the dispute; it should not be simplified into a claim that one son “won the estate.”

What is known—and what remains unclear
Biography.com independently supports the four-son account, while detailed birth dates and some family-history specifics rely on secondary reporting. The conflicting records for Clarence and Edward are a reason to avoid presenting their birth years as certain. Accounts of the sons’ musical activities also vary in detail and do not provide a complete picture of their present-day work.
