Balazs and Busson were not her husbands. This timeline covers those publicly supported relationships, not every rumor or private relationship.
Gary Oldman: Thurman’s first husband
Thurman met actor Gary Oldman when she was 18. In a 1996 Vanity Fair profile, she described him as her first love and later called their marriage a mistake. Vanity Fair’s profile records her reflection, while British Vogue’s 2021 presentation of a 1994 interview preserves her objection to press accounts of their separation: “Nothing that was written about what happened between us is true. It was all interpersonal.”

That qualification matters: the available reporting does not establish a reliable public explanation for the breakup, so rumors should not be repeated as fact.
Ethan Hawke: marriage after Gattaca
Thurman and actor Ethan Hawke met while making Gattaca. Retrospective reporting places their marriage from 1998 to 2005. El País’s 2025 account recounts Hawke’s recent reflection on the heightened intimacy of acting and his meeting with Thurman.

The couple’s separation was reported in 2006, when divorce proceedings were still ongoing, according to The Independent. Rumors about an affair circulated, but Hawke denied them; the reporting does not establish them as the cause of the divorce.
André Balazs: an on-and-off relationship
Thurman was publicly linked to hotelier André Balazs in the mid-2000s. In 2006, The Independent described the relationship as being in an “off” period. The following year, her publicist confirmed the split to the Associated Press, saying, “I confirm that they are no longer a couple.” The AP report described their relationship as on and off for three years. CBS News carried the report.
The accounts support describing Balazs as a former partner, not a husband.
Arpad Busson: partner and former fiancé
Thurman and financier Arpad Busson were together and became engaged in 2008. In an interview that year, Redbook described Thurman as being in love with him. Reuters reported that her representative confirmed the engagement; the report was republished by ABC News. The Independent also covered the announcement in its 2008 report.

An engagement is not a marriage: Busson was Thurman’s fiancé, not her husband. Retrospective reporting dates the end of their relationship to 2014.

These four names are the relationships supported by the cited interviews and reporting: Oldman and Hawke as husbands, Balazs as an on-and-off partner, and Busson as a partner and fiancé. This is a record of publicly documented relationships, not a claim to enumerate every private relationship or rumor. In particular, speculation about co-stars or directors should not be treated as a confirmed relationship without dependable evidence.
