NordVPN is the best all-round choice for trying to access region-restricted YouTube videos; Surfshark is the value pick, ExpressVPN is easiest to set up, Proton VPN is the privacy-led option, and Private Internet Access (PIA) offers broad U.S. location choice. None can guarantee access to every video, and YouTube TV has separate location rules. A VPN can change the apparent location of your internet connection, but it cannot override every account, licensing, or service restriction.
Which VPN should you choose for YouTube?
This is an evidence-based shortlist, not a promise that every provider will work with every video or in every country. YouTube can identify and challenge VPN server addresses, and results may change by country, server, video, account, device, and date. TechRadar’s 2026 YouTube comparison places NordVPN first overall and Surfshark as a value alternative; separate testing has also reported difficulty accessing U.S. YouTube in at least one retest location. See TechRadar’s YouTube VPN comparison.
| Provider | Best for | Connections and free option | Price and refund details |
|---|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | Best overall | Up to 10 simultaneous devices; no free plan stated on its pricing page | Plan and renewal prices vary by offer and location; 30-day money-back guarantee. Check current terms at NordVPN pricing. |
| Surfshark | Best value and many devices | Unlimited simultaneous connections; free plan not stated on the comparison page | Current price and refund terms depend on the plan and checkout offer. Check Surfshark’s plan comparison. |
| ExpressVPN | Easy setup and broad device support | Connection limit and free plan not stated in the cited setup guidance | Current plan, renewal price, and refund terms should be checked at ExpressVPN checkout. |
| Proton VPN | Privacy focus and a free starting point | Free plan available; paid streaming access is the relevant option for location-specific unblocking | Price and refund terms vary by plan; check Proton VPN pricing. |
| Private Internet Access | U.S. location choice and advanced controls | Connection limit and free plan not stated in the cited comparison | Check current introductory and renewal pricing at PIA checkout. |
Prices and offers change by country, currency, term, tier, taxes, and purchase channel. Long-term plans are often prepaid, so a displayed monthly equivalent may not be the amount charged each month. Compare the upfront charge, renewal price, term, and refund conditions before subscribing. NordVPN specifically says introductory pricing applies to the first subscription period and renewal may cost more.
What does “unblock YouTube” mean?
The phrase can describe several different goals, and a VPN is not equally useful for all of them:

- Watch a video unavailable in your current country: A VPN may help if access is restricted mainly by the viewer’s IP location and the chosen VPN address is accepted.
- Reach YouTube on a filtered network: A VPN may help on some school, workplace, hotel, airport, or national networks, but local law and network rules still apply.
- Change apparent viewing location: Connecting through another country can affect location-based results or recommendations, but account and browser signals may also matter.
- Use YouTube while traveling: A VPN can encrypt traffic between your device and the VPN server and substitute the server’s IP address for your connection’s apparent IP. It does not make you anonymous or guarantee that YouTube will accept that location.
- Watch YouTube TV: This is a separate, location-dependent service with home-area and local playback rules. Do not treat success with an ordinary YouTube video as proof that YouTube TV will work.
- Get a cheaper foreign YouTube Premium plan: This is not a recommended use. YouTube requires users to represent their country accurately and warns that misrepresenting location or circumventing availability restrictions can lead to cancellation.
Restrictions may reflect copyright licensing, a creator’s or rights holder’s settings, local regulations, government or network filtering, account or service availability, or VPN-IP detection. A VPN cannot restore a video that has been removed globally, enabled only for certain accounts, or disabled by its uploader.
Can a VPN access every YouTube video?
No. A VPN is most relevant when YouTube’s restriction is based primarily on the viewer’s IP location. It may fail if YouTube recognizes the server address as a VPN or data-center IP, or if the block depends on the account, age, device, payment profile, or other location signals. Cookies, GPS, DNS, browser information, and a Google account’s history can also conflict with the VPN’s apparent country. Some services require local payment or country verification.
Try a different server in the same target country if the first one fails, but do not assume that a larger server network means more working YouTube addresses. Success with a video also says nothing definitive about YouTube TV, local sports availability, or Premium eligibility.
The five VPNs, and who each suits
1. NordVPN — best overall
NordVPN is the default recommendation for readers who want one broadly capable service for YouTube and other regional streaming platforms. Current comparison coverage rates it highly for unblocking, speed, security, server coverage, and ease of use. Its pricing page advertises thousands of servers across more than 200 locations, up to 10 simultaneous devices, and a 30-day money-back guarantee; confirm the current offer and renewal terms on its pricing page.

Real-world speeds may differ depending on your network configuration.*
- 【Easy Setup】Please refer to the User Manual and the Unboxing & Setup video guide on Amazon for detailed setup instructions and methods for connecting to the Internet.
- 【Pocket-friendly】Lightweight design(145g) which designed for your next trip or adventure. Alongside its portable, compact design makes it easy to take with you on the go.
- 【Full Gigabit Ports】Gigabit Wireless Internet Router with 2 Gigabit LAN ports and 1 Gigabit WAN ports, ideal for lots of internet plan and allow you to connect your wired devices directly.
- 【Keep your Internet Safe】IPv6 supported. OpenVPN & WireGuard pre-installed, compatible with 30+ VPN service providers. Cloudflare encryption supported to protect the privacy.
It is not a guaranteed fix: a separate Tom’s Guide review reported difficulty with U.S. YouTube in at least one retest location. Renewal pricing can be higher than the introductory rate, and some features are tied to higher-priced tiers. Choose it if you want a polished general-purpose app and are willing to check the renewal price and test your target location.
2. Surfshark — best value for households
Surfshark’s unlimited simultaneous connections make it appealing for families and people connecting many devices. Current YouTube comparison coverage describes its streaming performance as broadly similar to NordVPN’s at a lower price point, although no provider’s server count guarantees that YouTube will accept a particular connection. Its comparison page is the place to check current plans and inclusions.
Independent AV-TEST measurements in a 2025 comparative report placed Surfshark among the fastest tested providers for local and overseas downloads. Those laboratory results are not a forecast of an individual viewer’s speed or proof of 4K playback. Introductory and renewal prices differ, and some extras may require a higher tier. Surfshark fits best when connection count and value matter more than specialized privacy features.
3. ExpressVPN — easiest for beginners and mixed devices
ExpressVPN has setup guidance for Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Linux, Fire TV, Android TV, Chromecast with Google TV, routers, and other supported devices. Its instructions cover choosing a server, checking the IP address, and running a DNS leak test. For desktop playback it generally recommends a browser; for phones and streaming devices, the official YouTube app may be the better route. See ExpressVPN’s streaming setup and troubleshooting guidance.

- New-Gen WiFi Standard – WiFi 6(802.11ax) standard supporting MU-MIMO and OFDMA technology for better efficiency and throughput.Antenna : External antenna x 4. Processor : Dual-core (4 VPE). Power Supply : AC Input : 110V~240V(50~60Hz), DC Output : 12 V with max. 1.5A current.
- Ultra-fast WiFi Speed – RT-AX1800S supports 1024-QAM for dramatically faster wireless connections
- Increase Capacity and Efficiency – Supporting not only MU-MIMO but also OFDMA technique to efficiently allocate channels, communicate with multiple devices simultaneously
- 5 Gigabit ports – One Gigabit WAN port and four Gigabit LAN ports, 10X faster than 100–Base T Ethernet.
- Commercial-grade Security Anywhere – Protect your home network with AiProtection Classic, powered by Trend Micro. And when away from home, ASUS Instant Guard gives you a one-click secure VPN.
It is a sensible choice if straightforward setup and device coverage matter more than the lowest price. In the cited 2025 AV-TEST comparison, ExpressVPN was slower than Surfshark, NordVPN, and Proton VPN in the local-download comparison, although it led the overseas-upload comparison. These are results from that test’s methodology, not universal speeds. Check the live checkout page for the plan, renewal amount, and refund terms.
4. Proton VPN — best privacy-focused choice
Proton VPN offers a free plan alongside paid plans. Its paid service is the more appropriate choice if you need a specific country or streaming access: the free tier has restricted country selection and does not provide the same streaming access or server choice. Proton lists paid features including streaming access, secure protocols, NetShield ad, tracker, and malware blocking, and says it does not keep session-usage logs. Review Proton VPN’s plan details and its YouTube VPN page.
In the 2025 AV-TEST report, Proton VPN’s approximate overseas download average was 800 Mb/s under that lab’s test conditions. That figure should not be read as an expected home connection speed. Proton is a good fit for privacy-conscious users and people who want to try a free VPN for ordinary use, but free access is not a dependable way to reach a particular country’s YouTube videos.
5. Private Internet Access — best for U.S. location choice and advanced controls
TechRadar’s YouTube comparison highlights PIA’s broad server spread, including at least one server in every U.S. state, and its extensive configuration options. This can matter if you need to choose a particular state rather than simply connect to the United States. It does not guarantee access to local YouTube TV channels or sports broadcasts. See the comparison and check PIA’s checkout page for current pricing and terms.

PIA suits technically confident users seeking location choice and manual controls. Its settings may be less approachable than ExpressVPN’s or NordVPN’s, and real performance depends on the server and route rather than the headline network size.
What matters when choosing a VPN for YouTube?
- Access in your target country: The useful question is whether the provider currently has working addresses where you need them, not how many servers it advertises overall.
- Alternative servers in that country: If one IP is blocked, another server gives you somewhere to try without changing your intended location.
- Stable speed and latency: A distant or congested route can buffer, particularly for live video. Independent AV-TEST’s 2025 report measured approximate overseas download averages of 1,377 Mb/s for Surfshark, 1,047 Mb/s for NordVPN, 839 Mb/s for ExpressVPN, and 800 Mb/s for Proton VPN. The report tested connections across users in Asia, Europe, and the United States; these lab averages reflect its particular methodology and are not promises of YouTube quality for an individual subscriber. Read the AV-TEST VPN performance report.
- Apps for your devices: Check support for the actual browser, phone, TV, router, or streaming device you plan to use. A browser extension may cover browser traffic but not a YouTube app.
- Privacy protections: Look for a kill switch and DNS leak protection, and read the provider’s logging and protocol descriptions. Encryption protects the link to the VPN server; it is not anonymity.
- Restrictive-network tools: Obfuscation or stealth features may help on some filtered networks, but they do not override local law or guarantee access.
- Household use and cost: Compare simultaneous connections, upfront charge, renewal amount, subscription length, taxes, refund window, and the features in each tier.
How to try a VPN with YouTube
- Choose a provider with servers in the country relevant to the video or service. For travel privacy without location switching, connect to a server you trust rather than assuming a foreign location is needed.
- Install the provider’s official app from its website or your device’s official app store, then sign in.
- Connect to the target country and confirm that the VPN reports a connection. If practical, check the public IP location as well.
- Open YouTube in a private browser window or restart the official app, then search for the video again.
- If playback fails, disconnect and try another server in the same country. Test the browser and app separately; clear YouTube cookies or site data if stale location signals may be involved.
- If the VPN appears connected but YouTube still sees your usual location, check for DNS, IPv6, or WebRTC leaks and disable conflicting proxy or VPN extensions. Provider support can help identify app-specific settings.
ExpressVPN’s guidance recommends checking the IP and running a DNS leak test when troubleshooting. A smart-TV setup may require the VPN’s own app, a VPN-enabled router, or a supported streaming device. ExpressVPN notes that its MediaStreamer DNS service is not a VPN and does not provide VPN privacy or VPN location switching.
Why a VPN may fail, and what to try
YouTube shows the same regional restriction
- Switch to another server in the same country; a nearby city may have a less congested route.
- Clear YouTube cookies and cached site data, then retry in a private browser window.
- Turn off conflicting browser proxy extensions and check for DNS, IPv6, or WebRTC leaks.
- Try the official app if browser playback fails, or a browser if the app fails. Temporarily signing out can help determine whether account signals are involved.
The video plays but buffers
- Try a closer server and the provider’s recommended protocol. Depending on the app, options may include WireGuard, NordLynx, or Lightway.
- Temporarily lower video quality to distinguish a bandwidth problem from a location block.
- Compare playback with the VPN off to establish whether the VPN route is the cause.
A TV or streaming device cannot connect as expected
Use a VPN app on the device if supported, or consider a VPN-enabled router or compatible Android TV or Fire TV device. A DNS-only product may help with some device configurations, but it is not equivalent to a VPN: it may not encrypt traffic or provide VPN privacy. Casting can also fail if the phone and television appear to be on different networks.
YouTube Premium: do not use a VPN to misstate your country
YouTube says Premium should be used predominantly in the country where the membership was purchased. Extended travel or a move can affect a subscription; users must accurately represent their country, and misrepresenting location with a VPN or circumventing availability restrictions may result in cancellation. Some countries also require a locally issued payment method. See YouTube’s Premium availability and travel policy and accepted payment methods.
Best Value
- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
If YouTube asks you to verify your country during signup, its troubleshooting guidance tells users using a VPN or proxy to turn it off and check their actual payment country. A VPN does not make a foreign payment method local. Follow YouTube’s country-verification troubleshooting steps.
YouTube TV is not the same as ordinary YouTube
YouTube TV has distinct location verification, home-area, and local playback rules. A VPN may conflict with location checks, and a connection through a U.S. state does not ensure access to local channels or sports broadcasts. Use the official YouTube TV app on a supported device and provide accurate location information; do not rely on a VPN as a way to guarantee service availability.
Is it legal to use a VPN with YouTube?
VPN laws vary by jurisdiction. Even where VPN use is legal, accessing content may still be restricted by copyright law, platform terms, or a school or employer’s acceptable-use policy. A VPN does not grant permission from a rights holder, and bypassing an organizational or government network block may carry consequences. Check the rules that apply where you are. ExpressVPN likewise says users are responsible for complying with applicable laws and third-party terms in its streaming guidance.
When a VPN is not the right solution
- If you only want privacy on public Wi-Fi and do not need to change apparent location, a VPN connected to a suitable nearby server may be enough; location switching is not required.
- If you need access to a paid service, an official local subscription is the straightforward option where available.
- Smart DNS may suit a supported streaming-device setup when location routing is the goal and VPN privacy is not; it should not be described as a VPN.
- If a network administrator blocks YouTube, follow the network’s rules rather than assuming a VPN is permitted.
For most people, start with NordVPN and test the actual country and video you care about. Choose Surfshark if unlimited devices and value matter most, ExpressVPN for simpler setup, Proton VPN for privacy or a free general-purpose starting point, and PIA for U.S. state-level choice and advanced controls.
