It is a stronger pick for viewers drawn to bold atmosphere and a restless central performance than for those seeking a tightly paced character study.
What is Ballad of a Small Player about?
Edward Berger’s 2025 film follows Lord Doyle, a high-stakes gambler hiding in Macao as his debts mount and his past catches up with him. An enigmatic woman, Dao Ming, draws his attention at a baccarat table, while investigator Cynthia Blithe pursues him. Colin Farrell plays Doyle, Fala Chen plays Dao Ming, and Tilda Swinton plays Blithe.
Rowan Joffé adapted the screenplay from Lawrence Osborne’s 2014 novel, The Ballad of a Small Player. The book is an optional companion, not background viewers need in order to follow the film.
How does the film look and feel?
Berger aims for more than a conventional addiction drama. In an October 29, 2025 interview with Netflix Tudum, he described wanting to combine pop, opera, drama, humor, and supernatural elements, with a ghost-story quality. The casino world is designed to reflect Doyle’s disordered inner life rather than simply serve as a backdrop.

The film’s visual setting draws on contrasts such as lush vegetation, Portuguese colonial architecture, and modern casino towers. Those are elements of the movie’s designed Macao, not a claim that it captures the whole city. The result is a heightened, kinetic approach that makes atmosphere and visual scale central to the experience.
Berger told Tudum: “I’m a big believer in taking the audience by the lapel and dragging them through the movie from beginning to end.” That intention helps explain the film’s restless energy; whether the momentum holds throughout is another matter.

Where does the story succeed—and where does it falter?
TechRadar’s reviewer praises the cinematography and Farrell’s performance, but finds that the film wanes around the two-thirds mark. In that reviewer’s assessment, Doyle’s personal progress arrives too quickly near the end, leaving the emotional resolution less developed than the film’s elaborate style might lead viewers to expect.
That is a specific critical judgment, not a universal verdict. The Associated Press described the wider response as mixed and characterized the film as stylish and neo-noir; no verified aggregate score is available here. The tension between visual ambition and narrative momentum is the most useful way to approach the film: its images and Farrell’s work may hold attention even when the story’s final stretch feels compressed.

Is Ballad of a Small Player worth watching?
Choose it if you enjoy films that take formal risks, foreground a vivid setting, and mix drama with humor and supernatural atmosphere. Farrell’s performance and the film’s visual design are its clearest draws. If you want a consistently propulsive plot or a fully earned, gradual emotional transformation, the late pacing and resolution may frustrate you.
The large-screen scale is another consideration: TechRadar’s reviewer felt the visuals would benefit from a bigger display. That is a viewing preference rather than a requirement, but it may matter if you are deciding between a phone-sized screen and a television.
