No. Robert Downey Jr. is confirmed to play Victor von Doom, better known as Doctor Doom, in Avengers: Doomsday—not Tony Stark or Iron Man. Disney+ says there is no confirmed connection between Stark and Doom, so claims that Doom is an Iron Man variant remain speculation.
Who is Robert Downey Jr. playing in Avengers: Doomsday?
Downey is playing Victor von Doom, or Doctor Doom. Disney’s official movie page identifies his character as “Victor von Doom/Doctor Doom (Robert Downey Jr.),” and Disney’s March 26, 2025 cast announcement also names him as Victor von Doom.
Marvel Studios announced Downey’s return in the Doctor Doom role at San Diego Comic-Con on July 27, 2024. Disney’s account of the announcement identifies his earlier Marvel Cinematic Universe character as Tony Stark/Iron Man and records Downey’s remark: “New mask, same task.” The line accompanied the announcement of his new role; it does not say that Doom is Iron Man.
Is Doctor Doom secretly Tony Stark or an Iron Man variant?
That has not been confirmed. Disney+’s October 5, 2026 guide says there is “no confirmed connection between Tony Stark and Doctor Doom” and describes theories linking Doom to Iron Man as speculation.

Downey’s return as a familiar actor does not, by itself, make the new character the same person as his former one. Until Marvel announces a connection, the established answer is that Downey plays Doctor Doom and that any Stark-Doom identity link is unconfirmed. The film has not yet been released, so claims about an eventual identity reveal or plot explanation should not be treated as fact.

The official pages list different dates for different territories: Disney’s US movie page gives December 18, 2026, while Disney+’s UK guide gives December 16, 2026 for UK cinemas. These are territory-specific release dates, not conflicting dates for one market. Check the relevant local listing closer to release, since cinema schedules can change.

No. Disney+ says viewers can jump into Avengers: Doomsday without having watched previous Marvel films or shows. For viewers who want more context about Downey’s earlier role, Disney’s movie page recommends Avengers: Endgame among related films and describes it as his last MCU appearance as Iron Man. That viewing is optional, not a prerequisite.
