Yes. Marvel confirmed that Anthony and Joe Russo will direct the next two Avengers films: Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Their return is official, not merely reported. The release dates have changed since the original announcement, so the May 2026 and May 2027 dates Marvel gave in 2024 are no longer current schedule information.
Are the Russo brothers directing Avengers 5 and 6?
Marvel announced on July 27, 2024, that Anthony and Joe Russo would direct Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. The announcement confirms the assignment; “Avengers 5 and 6” are informal ways to refer to the films, whose announced titles are Doomsday and Secret Wars. Disney’s announcement originally listed the films for May 2026 and May 2027, respectively.
What are the current release dates?
The May dates were the schedule at the time of Marvel’s 2024 announcement, not the later reported schedule. An Associated Press report dated September 2, 2026, described Doomsday and its 2027 follow-up, Secret Wars, but the sources available here do not include a current official Marvel or Disney release-calendar page. Later 2026 coverage reported December 18, 2026, for Doomsday and December 17, 2027, for Secret Wars; treat those as reported dates rather than dates verified here against an official calendar. Associated Press coverage and The Washington Post’s September 2026 preview provide later context on the films.
Why is their return notable?
The Russos previously directed Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, making these new films a return to the franchise they directed in those installments. Disney also identified those credits in its March 2025 announcement about the Doomsday cast. That history explains why the directing announcement is a reunion; by itself, it does not establish how the new films will turn out.
