Austria’s Chancellor Karl Nehammer defended the decision to cancel Taylor Swift’s three Vienna concerts, calling it responsible and understandable after officials confirmed a planned attack. He also acknowledged the disappointment for fans and said cooperation among Austrian police, the DSN and foreign services helped prevent a tragedy.
What did Karl Nehammer say about the cancellation?
Speaking in Vienna on 8 August 2024, Nehammer said the cancellation was a bitter disappointment for fans, but that Barracuda Music had acted responsibly. Reuters reported his translated words: “In my opinion, the organizer acted very responsibly and understandably with the cancellation.” Reuters video coverage and contemporaneous ORF coverage described his view of the decision as understandable.
In a social-media statement reported by Reuters, Nehammer credited security cooperation for averting a tragedy: “Thanks to the intensive cooperation of our police and the newly established DSN with foreign services, the threat was identified early on, combated and a tragedy prevented.” Reuters reported the statement. ORF characterized his description of the threat as “sehr ernst,” or very serious.
Why were the Vienna concerts cancelled?
The three concerts at Vienna’s Ernst-Happel-Stadion were scheduled for 8–10 August 2024. Austrian authorities confirmed a planned attack, and Barracuda Music, the event organizer, announced late on 7 August that the shows would be cancelled. The organizer made the cancellation announcement; Nehammer publicly defended it afterward.

On 7 August, police detained two people suspected of plotting attacks connected with the concerts. Earlier that day, police had said the events would go ahead with heightened entry checks, personal searches and specialist security deployments. The subsequent government confirmation of a planned attack changed the situation. Reuters’ report on the cancellation covered the announcement and arrests.
What Nehammer said later about security policy
Nehammer’s comments on the cancellation were followed by proposals concerning Austria’s counter-terrorism powers. On 11 August, he called for intelligence agencies to have greater ability to monitor communications on messaging apps, according to Reuters. On 13 August, Reuters reported that he announced steps to strengthen the country’s counter-terrorism capacity: Reuters report.

Those were later policy responses. They were not the stated reason Barracuda Music cancelled the concerts; the cancellation followed officials’ confirmation of a planned attack.

In 2026, the Associated Press reported terrorism charges against a 21-year-old man in connection with the plot. That later prosecution reporting is separate from what was established publicly when Nehammer spoke in August 2024. Associated Press report.
