Blake Lively and Leighton Meester appear to have been friendly colleagues on Gossip Girl, but the public accounts do not describe them as close off-screen friends. That distinction comes from the show’s executive producer and a statement from Lively’s representative in 2017. Meester’s comments in 2025 about close friendships with other cast members do not confirm her current relationship with Lively.
Were Blake Lively and Leighton Meester friends in real life?
The clearest public description is that they got along at work but were not close friends like Serena van der Woodsen and Blair Waldorf, the characters they played. In a 2017 interview marking Gossip Girl’s 10th anniversary, executive producer Joshua Safran said the actresses “were not friends.” The surrounding account described them as friendly colleagues, not as people who hated one another or were embroiled in a feud. PinkNews reported Safran’s comments in 2024.
A representative for Lively also told Harper’s Bazaar, as reported by PinkNews, that the actresses had “never been best friends, and never professed to be,” adding that Lively went to work, did her job, and went home. That was a representative’s statement, not a direct quote from Lively herself.
What has Leighton Meester said about the cast since?
On an October 30, 2025 podcast episode, Meester spoke about staying in touch with former castmates. She said, “There’s a couple people that I’m still very close with,” and named Amanda Setton and Zuzanna Szadkowski, describing both as dear friends. She also said she sees other people from time to time, but less regularly. Us Weekly’s report of the episode does not say Meester named Lively or directly address whether they are currently friends.

Meester also reflected generally that on the show, “You made friends and lost friends and you reinvented yourself and learned things and maybe you embarrassed yourself.” That comment describes her experience on the series; it is not a statement about Lively.
Does this mean they had a feud?
No. The accounts support a more limited conclusion: cordiality at work, without evidence that the actresses shared a close friendship. “Not friends” should not be inflated into “enemies” or “couldn’t stand each other.” Nor does the absence of a direct recent statement establish that they are estranged or in conflict. Their present-day private relationship remains unconfirmed in the cited public accounts.

How Serena and Blair’s friendship differs from the actors’ relationship
On Gossip Girl, Lively played Serena and Meester played Blair, whose fictional friendship combines closeness, rivalry, and conflict. That scripted relationship is not evidence of how the actors felt about one another off screen. Netflix Tudum’s series guide identifies their roles and notes that the television adaptation is based on Cecily von Ziegesar’s novels.
