Perth replaced the customary large-scale Skyworks format on Australia Day 2023 with a smaller City of Light program: a drone and fireworks show intended to be viewed from Langley Park. The City of Perth retained its citizenship and awards ceremony and the Birak Concert. South Perth held a morning ceremony and breakfast instead of its usual afternoon and evening foreshore events.
What changed in Perth’s 2023 program?
The Skyworks tradition began in 1985, according to ABC News. In 2023, the customary large-scale format was not staged. The replacement, part of the City of Perth’s City of Light program, paired drones with fireworks in a smaller evening display.
The change did not mean Perth’s program was cancelled. The City of Perth schedule included a citizenship and awards ceremony at Perth Town Hall, the Birak Concert at Supreme Court Gardens, and family activities and food trucks at Langley Park from 3 p.m. The evening show was designed to be viewed from Langley Park. Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas said, “The best vantage point will now be at Langley Park,” in a January 19, 2023 government press conference transcript.

The South Perth program was therefore not an alternative evening viewing site for the City of Perth show. South Perth’s Australia Day events were confined to the morning.

Why did Perth change the format?
Zempilas described the redesign as a response to both the expense of the large-scale event and changing community sentiment about January 26. He said the City was seeking a middle ground for families, new citizens, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. These were the Lord Mayor’s stated reasons, not evidence that any one factor alone determined the decision.
ABC News reported that 106,000 people viewed the show from the South Perth foreshore in 2020, compared with an estimated 30,000–40,000 in 2022. It also reported that the 2022 Australia Day celebration raised about one third of the $904,808 cost to host it. Those attendance and cost figures were reported by ABC News; they are not independently audited figures in the material available here. The attendance counts refer specifically to South Perth foreshore viewers, while $904,808 is the reported cost of hosting the event.

In a statement reproduced by ABC News on January 20, 2023, Zempilas said: “Until such time as there is a change of date mandated by Australian federal parliament, the City of Perth will look to mark the day respectfully, appropriately for the mood of the community.”

National grant figures provide context, but they do not describe Perth’s local program. In a January 19, 2023 government press conference, Assistant Minister Patrick Gorman said that 42 per cent of sponsored Australia Day events had a specific First Nations component, up from 36 per cent the previous year. He also said grant recipients had to explain accessibility measures, giving examples such as Auslan interpreters, accessibility improvements, and quieter spaces. These are national figures and grant requirements, not Perth-specific measures.
Gorman described “a continuation of an increase in the amount of investment in First Nations cultural events that are happening as part of Australia Day.” His remarks formed part of the wider national discussion around how events marked the day; Perth’s own schedule and format were set out separately by the City of Perth and City of South Perth.
