In Doreen Virtue’s published system, 111 is linked to thoughts, 222 to faith, 333 and 444 to spiritual support, and 555 to change. These are interpretations—not scientifically verified meanings or reliable predictions—and other systems assign different themes to the same numbers.
What are angel numbers?
“Angel number” is a spiritual meaning-making framework: people notice repeating sequences such as 111 or 444 and interpret them as significant. The meanings depend on the author or tradition offering them; the available sources do not establish one universal definition or show that a sequence objectively carries an angelic message.
A question reproduced in Google Books’ description of Doreen Virtue’s book captures the experience: “Why do I always see the numbers 444 (or 111, 333, etc.) everywhere I go?” That is an example of reader phrasing in a book description, not evidence about how often people ask the question or why they notice the numbers. Google Books’ record for Angel Numbers identifies the book as a 2005 Hay House pocket guide covering angelic interpretations from 0 to 999.
What do 111, 222, 333, 444 and 555 mean?
The following interpretations come from a reproduced excerpt of Doreen Virtue and Lynette Brown’s Angel Numbers. They describe that book’s spiritual framework, not established facts about what the numbers mean.

#1 Best Overall
| Sequence | Virtue and Brown’s interpretation |
|---|---|
| 111 | Monitor your thoughts; the excerpt connects the sequence with opportunity and thoughts manifesting. |
| 222 | Have faith rather than worry; the excerpt says the situation is resolving. |
| 333 | The Ascended Masters are near and offer help, love and companionship. |
| 444 | Angels surround and support you. |
| 555 | A major life change is approaching; the excerpt advises against labeling it positive or negative in advance. |
The interpretations are reproduced by Spirit Library’s excerpt. A separate system illustrates why it matters to name the source: Chronicle Books’ Angel Numbers divination set associates 111 with intuition, 222 with alignment, 444 with stability and 555 with change. Its publisher listing presents another interpretive product, not evidence that its meanings are more authoritative. Hardie Grant Publishing’s listing describes the set’s themes for ten repeated-number sequences.
How to use an interpretation without treating it as a prediction
If a number feels meaningful to you, you can use its assigned theme as a reflection prompt rather than as a command or forecast. For example, someone who adopts the 555 interpretation above might ask what changes are underway and what practical choices are available, without assuming that a specific event is guaranteed.
- Check which author or tradition supplied the interpretation; do not combine different systems into one supposedly definitive answer.
- Separate reflection from prediction. A spiritual prompt cannot establish what will happen next.
- Make consequential decisions using relevant evidence and practical judgment, not a number sequence alone.
What does research say about psychic mediums and angel numbers?
The cited empirical studies examine alleged mediumship—claims of receiving information about deceased people—not whether repeating numbers carry messages. They cannot verify the interpretations above or show that an angelic source caused someone to notice a sequence.
Mediumship findings are debated
A 2021 meta-analysis reviewed 14 papers covering 18 experiments published from 2001 through December 2019. Its authors reported an overall standardized proportion-index effect size of .18, with a 95% confidence interval of .12 to .25, above chance. They concluded that the body of studies supported the hypothesis that some mediums could retrieve information about deceased people by unknown means. That estimate describes the meta-analysis of mediumship experiments; it is not a success rate for angel-number readings. The 2021 meta-analysis in EXPLORE addresses the distinction.

A 2005 paper, “Testing alleged mediumship: Methods and results,” reported that tests of several professional mediums did not support genuine mediumistic ability and discussed a history of mixed results and methodological debate. The paper in the British Journal of Psychology offers an important counterpoint to the later meta-analysis.
The Windbridge Research Center also cautions that accuracy alone cannot determine whether information comes from deceased people or from another proposed anomalous process; its page describes separate research into mediums’ experiences. Windbridge’s mediumship research overview concerns mediumship, not the meaning of numbers. Jessica Utts’s 1995 report takes a more affirmative position on psychic functioning based on government-sponsored research she reviewed, but it is her assessment—not a consensus finding or evidence specifically about angel numbers. Utts’s report, “An Assessment of the Evidence for Psychic Functioning”, sets out that view.
