In Supriya Nair’s 2018 reading, Amitabha Bagchi’s Half the Night Is Gone is emotionally rich and formally distinctive, but its political provocations do not go far enough. The novel’s layered family story and Hindustani literary inheritance give its past-and-present connections unusual force; Nair argues, however, that its treatment of caste, gender, revivalist Hindu spirituality and the Hindi-English divide leaves consequential questions insufficiently examined.
What kind of novel is Half the Night Is Gone?
The novel works through a story within a story. Vishwanath, a celebrated Hindi novelist grieving his son, begins writing about the household of Lala Motichand, a merchant. Inside that household, the lives of the family and its servants—including Mange Ram and his son Parsadi—unfold across generations. The publisher presents the book as a novel about fatherhood, brotherhood, childhood, love, loyalty, poetry, mortality, religion and literature, as well as the making of post-independence India. Juggernaut’s description gives the reader the basic architecture; Nair’s review emphasizes how the intertwined histories of merchants and labourers make the past an active force in the present.
Four long letters from Vishwanath punctuate the embedded narrative, according to Nair. The structure brings private grief into contact with a larger historical and intellectual story: the characters inherit family memories and social arrangements they did not create, yet must live with their consequences.
Why language and memory give the book its emotional force
Nair’s central praise is for the novel’s literary atmosphere. She hears Hindustani not as decorative texture but as a source of emotional and cultural memory, with Urdu, Persian and Avadhi resonances alongside poetry and Tulsidas’s Ramcharitmanas. In her account, inherited words and verse provide a vocabulary for duty, belief, love and family bonds.

That inheritance suits a novel built around generations. The past persists not only through events but through language: the stories people tell, the verses they remember and the meanings they attach to family roles. Nair praises the tenderness and emotional range of this approach, the imaginative reconstruction of an older Delhi, and the movement between intimate domestic life and the intellectual history of modern India. These are her critical judgments, rather than neutral claims about how every reader will experience the book.
Where Nair thinks the political provocations stop short
Nair’s reservation is not that the novel avoids politics. Rather, she argues that it raises charged questions without sufficiently testing the implications of its sympathies—particularly where revivalist Hindu spirituality meets social hierarchy. She asks readers to notice how little attention the book gives to caste, and how its women remain largely silent. Those absences matter to a novel concerned with inherited duty and social continuity: who gets to define tradition, and whose experience is left out of its account?

She also finds the novel’s Hindi-versus-English discussion too simplified to encompass the competing political histories behind the language divide. This is the point at which Nair’s assessment produces its tension: a book she regards as a compelling account of memory and belonging may still leave the power relations embedded in those inheritances insufficiently interrogated. Her critique is an interpretation of the novel, not a consensus verdict.
How Bagchi distinguishes Vishwanath’s view from his own
A character’s explanation of political failure should not automatically be taken as the author’s position. In a 2019 Indian Express interview, Bagchi was asked about Vishwanath’s sense that political failure followed from a language barrier. He replied, “That’s what Vishwanath feels, but it’s a misunderstanding on his part.” The remark complicates any reading that treats Vishwanath’s view as a straightforward statement of the novel’s own argument. It does not erase Nair’s criticism of what the novel examines or leaves underdeveloped; it clarifies the distinction between a character’s interpretation and Bagchi’s explanation of that interpretation.
