Bachchan makes the character’s anger, wounded pride and tenderness legible at once, while the film’s conflict with his brother Ravi gives those emotions an ethical cost. The title’s “at 80” refers to the retrospective context of Bachchan’s 80th birthday in 2022—not his age today.
What is Deewaar about?
Directed by Yash Chopra and produced by Gulshan Rai, Deewaar is a Hindi film released in 1975. Salim-Javed wrote its story and screenplay. Its central characters are brothers shaped by hardship but drawn toward opposing answers: Vijay, played by Bachchan, turns to crime; Ravi, played by Shashi Kapoor, chooses the law. Their mother, played by Nirupa Roy, is the bond between them and the person caught in the consequences of their choices. Yash Raj Films’ official film page lists the release date as 1 January 1975 and provides the cast and synopsis; the Tuli Research Centre for India Studies’ archival record credits Salim-Javed and music by R. D. Burman.

The official synopsis says Vijay carries the stigma of his father’s actions and remembers poverty and abuse. When his criminal wealth becomes unacceptable to his mother, she leaves with Ravi. That premise makes the brothers’ conflict more than a contest between a good man and a bad one: it asks what justice means to people formed by deprivation, and whether success can repair the harm that shaped them.
Why is Deewaar one of Amitabh Bachchan’s best films?
Vijay’s success does not erase his hurt
Bachchan’s performance gives Vijay force without making force his only register. His anger and ambition grow out of humiliation; they are not presented as proof that the past has been overcome. The character’s rise can look like an escape from powerlessness, but the film keeps showing what it costs him: his choices deepen the divide with Ravi and place him against the law. That tension makes Vijay emotionally understandable without asking the viewer to mistake understanding for approval.

The role makes moral conflict personal
Vijay and Ravi embody different responses to hardship, but the film’s stakes are intimate. Ravi’s commitment to the law brings him into conflict with his own brother; Vijay’s pursuit of power threatens the family connection he still wants. Their mother’s refusal to accept criminal wealth makes that fracture concrete. The law, family loyalty and material success do not sit comfortably together, and Bachchan’s performance keeps the contradiction visible in Vijay rather than smoothing it into a heroic rise.
The screenplay gives the performance its shape
In a 2017 interview with Hindustan Times, Bachchan called Deewaar “the perfect script.” That is his retrospective judgment, not a measurable consensus, but it points to the role’s carefully joined pressures: childhood deprivation, adult ambition, brotherly opposition and the desire for maternal acceptance. Hindustan Times reported the interview on 30 January 2017.
How does Shashi Kapoor’s Ravi change the way we see Vijay?
Ravi prevents Vijay from becoming the film’s only measure of strength. Kapoor plays him with restraint, so the contrast is not simply between a louder criminal and a passive policeman. Ravi represents a competing moral choice, and his relationship with Vijay makes that choice painful rather than abstract. Vijay’s defiance has emotional appeal, but Ravi’s presence makes its consequences harder to ignore.
Bachchan later stressed how important that counterweight was. In a January 2025 interview reported by The Times of India, he said, “I don’t think ‘Deewaar’ would have been the film it is if it wasn’t for Shashi Kapoor’s understated performance.” He also credited Nirupa Roy’s central role in the brothers’ conflict. The Times of India reported his remarks in 2025.

Why does Deewaar’s brotherly conflict still resonate?
The film gives a familiar family split an ethical dimension. Ravi’s lawful path does not undo the conditions that marked the brothers’ lives; Vijay’s criminal success does not make those conditions right. Each brother’s position is tied to a different idea of duty and justice, and their mother’s response reveals how neither position can be separated from the family’s wounds. The conflict endures because it does not reduce hardship to a tidy lesson or treat wealth as a cure.
The film’s reputation also has a documented commercial and retrospective history, though the surviving descriptions here do not justify a precise earnings claim. The Directorate of Film Festivals’ Indian Panorama Catalogue 2015 calls Deewar a box-office “super hit” and says it was considered among the industry’s top ten money-spinners of its time; the catalogue passage gives no exact gross or independently verified ranking. What does “Amitabh Bachchan at 80” refer to?
Bachchan turned 80 in 2022. The Film Heritage Foundation’s Amitabh Bachchan: Back to the Beginning retrospective catalogue documents a restored digital print of Deewaar in a programme framed around his 80th birthday. The catalogue identifies the film as an Indian Hindi production from 1975, directed by Yash Chopra, written by Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar, and produced by Gulshan Rai. This retrospective is a reason the age framing remains relevant; it does not mean Bachchan is currently turning 80. Film Heritage Foundation, Amitabh Bachchan: Back to the Beginning.
