Steve Martin’s fortune is often estimated at $140 million, but that figure is not a verified financial disclosure. Wealthy Gorilla and a January 2026 Parade article citing Celebrity Net Worth publish that estimate; Celebrity Net Worth’s page, updated July 29, 2026, gives a different estimate of $150 million. Martin’s documented career spans comedy, television, film, writing, books, and music, but public sources do not show how much wealth any one field contributed.
Is Steve Martin worth $140 million?
That is a published estimate, not an established fact. Wealthy Gorilla displays a September 12, 2026 update date for its $140 million figure, while Parade attributed the same amount to Celebrity Net Worth in an article dated January 1, 2026. Celebrity Net Worth’s own page, updated July 29, 2026, reports $150 million instead. Wealthy Gorilla’s estimate, Parade’s January 2026 article, and Celebrity Net Worth’s updated figure are secondary estimates, not audited disclosures.
| Publisher and date | Published estimate | What the figure establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Wealthy Gorilla, page displays September 12, 2026 as last updated | $140 million | Secondary estimate; not a verified financial disclosure. Source |
| Parade, January 1, 2026, attributing its figure to Celebrity Net Worth | $140 million | Reported estimate; not an independent accounting. Source |
| Celebrity Net Worth, page updated July 29, 2026 | $150 million | Conflicts with the $140 million figures; not an audited disclosure. Source |
The difference is a reminder not to treat a celebrity net-worth number as a precise balance sheet. The sources reviewed do not provide independently verified totals for Martin’s assets, debts, taxes, or earnings by career category. Nor do they offer a transparent calculation that reconciles the $140 million and $150 million estimates.
How Steve Martin built a career across entertainment
Official and institutional biographies document a long career across several fields. They help explain why Martin’s work is associated with many revenue-producing forms of entertainment, but they do not quantify his income from any of them. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences biography, Biography.com’s career account, and Hulu’s official biography describe his work in comedy, television, film, writing, books, and music.
#1 Best Overall
Television writing and stand-up comedy
Martin began as a comedy writer for The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour and won an Emmy in 1969, according to Biography.com and Hulu. He became prominent as a stand-up comedian and through appearances on The Tonight Show and Saturday Night Live. Comedy albums were another part of his early career. These sources establish the work, not the sums it earned.
Film, screenwriting, and television acting
Martin moved from television and stand-up into feature films, becoming known as a screen performer as well as a writer. He later co-created and starred in Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building. Hulu’s biography confirms that role, but the sources reviewed do not establish his contract terms or verified compensation from the series. Claims about a specific per-episode rate or total take-home pay should therefore not be treated as confirmed.
Rank #2
Books and plays
Martin has also worked as an author and playwright. His memoir, Born Standing Up: A Comic’s Life, is a firsthand account of his stand-up years; the publisher describes it as a memoir, and Martin’s official book catalog lists it. Publisher information and Martin’s official catalog are useful for readers interested in the work, but the book is not evidence for a net-worth estimate.
Music and touring
Martin’s documented work includes bluegrass music, and his later touring combined music and comedy. In an Associated Press story published March 26, 2024, reporter Jake Coyle quoted Martin describing the act: “Eventually I became what I grew up with, which is a folk music act with a funny monologist, making funny intros to songs.” The Associated Press story illustrates how those interests came together; it does not establish what the performances earned.

Martin’s broad career makes it reasonable to say that he worked across multiple entertainment fields over several decades. It is not possible, from the sources reviewed, to assign a share of his estimated fortune to films, television, stand-up, books, plays, or music. Career history is not an earnings breakdown, and gross career income is not the same thing as current net worth after expenses, taxes, liabilities, and other financial changes.
